What constitutes a mentally mature person? - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
What does "mental maturity" mean to you?

LeadSled
It means you love to play Canasta and get excited when new bladder control products come to market.

I think I'll remain mentally immature for a while, I'm 22 and I still haven't had it hit yet.

Geofux
A lot of people think I'm a lot older than I actually am ... because of how I act. I'm 16.

jordanturbo
I act quite imature. I am cocky, sarcastic, and treat people like shit in general. But I am so self cenetered, egotistical, and full of myself, that most people who dont really know me, often take me seriously and show respect because of the authority I pretend I have, and they think I have been around a while to earn it (I am 20, most think I am 21). That is at work anyways, then while I am at work and sit on 780 all day because there is nothing to do, and act like an ass, and people still think I am serious because they can't see through my internet sarcasm

huntsean
Depends person to person. Different people will think different things of different people.

accord90
Being able to realize when to stop drinking before you puke on a friends couch

huntsean
Well put!

:asshole:

Now that you've said all that, I have nothing to contribute to this thread, because you pretty much just summed up my entire existence.

However. If I break down the topic of "Mental" and "Maturity" to the most basic of meanings... "Mental" means mind and "Maturity" means fully developed... I would think that any one person would only be TRULY "mentally mature" in the moment just prior to death.

^^^

Your logic is infallible.

I think mental maturity happens when we get dumped for the first time. Or when we loose a loved one to cancer. Any event that has significant impact on our psyche can contribute to the maturation of our minds. But to quantify it as "we achieve mental maturity when," is a little difficult. It all depends on personal experience..

I like your interpretation, very good +1rep
For the record I am like LeadSled, I will also remain mentally immature for as long as I can and I'm 30 & married right now :D

Does 1 year really make that big of a difference?

Rob:
How is one's mind MORE mature at the moment before death than a couple moments before death? or several years?

I don't see how a mind is more developed at the moment of death than moments prior to it.

Cyanide Ride
The patience to put up with those that are intolerable.

The adeptness to effectively communicate your ideas to those that do not understand.

The charisma to lead those who are lost.

The ability to make a child laugh, when they are at the end of hope.

The selflessness to help those without asking and seek no recognition.

The strength to support friends and family when their faith is gone.

All of these requires a person of mental courage and brawn.

To me, that is what a mentally mature person is. Responsible, accountable, and always dependable.

Godzilla
what he said,

and the ability to see and forgive faults not only in others but in yourself.

huntsean
Agreed. Sounds good to me.

Why is a banana yellow today, brown tomorrow, or green a week before?

That's just the way it is.

Don't argue with nature!

You asked another silly question, you got another silly answer, what can I say?

Did you want me to say something profound about my life experience and what I've learned about myself?

I'm approaching this as black and white as possible - for a change.

Again sarcasm over the internet. But in all reality the people I work with on projects, and clients are always suprised to find out my age

MAPEX
person who know how to give a respect no matter what they look like...

blondy
Some good answers here

It certainly has nothing to do with how old you are or how old you look...how much you have or what you have done...how much schooling you have

If the speed bumps you have suffered on the road of life up to now allow you to look at what that has made you...and are able to find something good in everything bad...that's a good sign of maturity...no regrets...no regrets

Own up and become responsible for your own actions...
You actually use your brain...control your thinking...instead of going off the deep end about something that angered you...

Accountability

Live the life with an open mind...always wanting to learn more

Know how to manage your mouth

Maturity is all about attitude

Up to now in an odd way I'm glad of what I have had to go thru...death...illness...even a little heart break...cause I think these things helped me to grow as a person...a lot of it has been pretty $hitty but so far have survived thru it...you learn to breathe more than react...unlike one who is naive and hasn't really "lived" life yet...they get all bent on the really small things

Perfection is not an option

:)

You're entitled to your opinion.

Edit: Why stop at mental maturity? Specifically? Why not just ask what constitutes maturity period?

CKXtreme
Besides some of the very good answers here, I think mental maturity means surviving for yourself.

Too often everyone falls back on blame, resentment, hate, lack of education, lack of motivation, lack of parental discipline, the list goes on, for anything that happens to them.

The mentally mature individual takes what life throws at them, and gets on with it. Theyre the ones that get thrown into life altering decisions, they pick a course of action, and they stick to it. Its hard to do, but the mature person will fix the course as they go.

And I do agree with Robs post to a certain degree. I think the moment before death you have probably the finest clarity, and an acceptance for what is, what was, and what will be.
