Where to take a trip? - Click HERE for Original Thread

EK9Hatch
Hey guys, my Father and I are looking to book a trip asap and I was wanting some input on recommendations on where I should go. Looking for a 1 week trip.

I'm looking for a last minute deal, all-inclusive. The only thing is, I'm looking for a pretty cheap deal.

So far I've been leaning on maybe Cancun? What about other parts of Mexico? How is the Dominican? Any other places I should consider?

Thailand.

EK9Hatch
Rob, I would LOVE to go to Thailand! But I think flights are pretty expensive (well, I guess when compared to places like Mexico, Vegas, etc)

Do you know any sites with good deals?

So far I looked on selloffvactions.com, expedia.ca and a few other randoms.

Call a travel agent maybe? Instead of looking for EVERYTHING online... Paperwork and real people CAN be of benefit sometimes.

I forget the name of the travel agency that my parents use, and I can't ask them, because they're on vacation again - right now!

haha

Mayan Riviera, Costa Rica or Cuba. My parents ahve gone to those places, 4.5star resorts and up, all inclusive, flights and they never paid more than $1000 person. Last minute deals are the best if you can handle 2 weeks or less notice. Good luck.

Oh yah, they loved Cuba. In fact they really liked em all.

this was emailed to me yesterday and it seems to have kick ass deals for almost any warm destination- i have never used exit.ca so i dont know how reputable of a site it is.

I recommend cancun, but i am very biased because i haven't been to Cuba or Domican yet, but i have many friends who have been all over.....mexico always comes up as a good time for the money.

People at work tell me that cuban resorts star ratings should be taken with a grain of salt as the standards are different everywhere you go, and some were disappointed by some high star resorts that they say did not compare to the same rating in mexico???

tripadvisor also has a good travel forum so you can search peoples responses to places and get real peoples accounts of how good or bad a place is/was. and you can find out where the bacholorette party girls will be staying and try to stay close to that beach

cancun is awesome, but if your going to chill with your pops you will probably have a great time anywhere you go!! i say find an all inclusive for a great deal at at least a 3 star place- that way the food should be decent- then your set.

im very jealous since i cant hit the beach untill june 28 (since the gf is a teacher)

EK9Hatch
Thanks for all the info guys! Keep the recommendations coming! I'm booking tonight! :D

I'm looking to spend $1000 or less...so I'm hoping I can get a decent trip for that.

I have heard good things about orbitz.com also, and when i was looking they had some good deals for my dates- just be sure to get an all inclusive because this site (if i remember correctly) didn't have a all inclusive check box for the search- some of the most amazing deals this site found looked AI but i don't think they were.

Orzel_pl
Phillidelphia.

Another question I had, was about getting needles? Isn't it recommend that I get a few? Where can I get this done? (Medi-center?) Is it covered under Alberta Health Care? If not, how much do they cost?

Jamie

euro777
http://www.twinrix.ca

I remember it costing $60 ish, out of pocket. I actually think my family got the dosage(s) from the Costco Pharmacy.

this was probably 4 yrs ago so i may be way off...but that sounds like how much i had to pay. As far as getting the needle any doc would prob be able to get you in for a quick appointment, either family doctor or medi-center.

EK9Hatch
Thanks for all the info euro777

Ahhhh I'm going crazy! I don't know where I should go! :p

Places of interest so far...

Mexico
Dominican Republic
Cuba
Costa Rica

What do you guys think??

Also, I notice a lot of the "specials" are at 3 or 3.5 star resorts. How good would these be? I haven't been anywhere down there, so I have no idea what to expect.

x2 That place is awesome

I've been to Cuba, Cancun and Mayan Riviera a few times in the last couple years.

From my experience, if you're looking for a last minute, top notch all-inclusive place for a great price, check out the Barcelo Colonial Beach or Tropical Beach in the Mayan Riviera. There are 5 Barcelo's all tied together, but the Colonial and Tropical are the best of the 5, they are unbelievably nice and have a great mixed crowd with lots of shit to do (Barcelo Palace is brand new, but they didn't have the kinks ironed out yet when I checked in January).

You can spend over $3k per person going there during spring break or Christmas, but at certain times a last minute deal will be around $1000 - $1500. I always booked it with expedia.

i just got back from mayan riviera in mexico and i had an awesome time. no rain at all and the resort is a 4.5 star i think...
i have over a thousand pics of the resort, i can post a few tomorrow morning when i get home from work.

EK9Hatch
Ok...I STILL haven't made up my mind yet. But I'm leaning towards Mexico.

So now, a couple of questions...

Where is the best part of Mexico to go to?
Any recommendations of specific resorts?
Any suggestions on what NOT to do while there?
Any other tips or recommendations when I'm there would be great!

Thanks guys! :)

Jamie

we just got back from the Mayan Riviera. It was hot all week and didnt rain once. there is tons of stuff to do if your willing to spend some mula. Our resort was awesome and very well maintained. you can go snorkeling right off the beach infront of the resort if you want too.

i posted some pics in a thread if you want to see.

everyone will have their preference and i am a big fan of cancun just because if you want to go wild you can and if you want to relax that is there too.

you can drink, golf, eat, shop, fishing adventures- where you catch the fish and then they take you back and cook it up for you at their restaurant, rip around on seadoo's $$, they have it all.

some of the clubs there were a ridiculous good time, i loved fat tuesday and coco-bongo.

and a very cool place to check out if you end up around cancun or the mayan is the isle majueres (spelling??) they call it the isle of women for all of us white folks who cannot speak spanish. This island is about a 30 min ferry ride from cancun and once you get there you can rent a golf cart and cover the whole island in a day. there are many amazing and secluded beaches that you can check out, some have a fee to get in there because they are basically the beaches of hotels on the island. The one we spent time at was like $3 and then another $3 to rent snorkel gear- this weekend i will post up some pics of the island so you can see what im talking about.

also on the isle is a crazy zip line set up where you ride the line over some beaches and over the water- i didnt get to ride it last time but next time there is no way im missing out.

3 months till i go!!, it is going to be mega hot in july when im there- my pasty white ass is gonna fry.

hey Jamie- this weekend i will post up some pics of the island- i got some cool shots of the beach and a couple that give you the view of cancun's hotel district from the island

Who has a good sale going on right now?

Can you tell me some of the destinations please?

Blackout-spec
try selloffvacations.com

just type in where you want to go and look for the deals!

ae1969
Cancun will fit the bill.

If you are going with a significant other, or you are older the mayan riviera is slow paced enough to just relax.

If you are looking for more night life, stay in the hotel zone near cancun.

You will find great deals either way.

Cuba, Dominican would be my second choice. Once was enough for me when travelling to those places.

1. When you get off the plane .....DO NOT STOP FOR ANYONE UNTIL YOU ARE OUT OF THE AIRPORT. IT IS CRAWLING with timeshare guys. Do not take any offers.

2. Buy your excursions/tours at the hotel. Less hassles

3. I would recommend....... (only going one week)
- bars in the hotel zone are great.
- go snorkling, underwater riversystems tours
- swimming with the dolphins at wet and wild. It is an experience of a lifetime.
- Tulum if you want a quick close history tour
- parasailing

If you go for longer
- isla mujeres,
- cozumel
- chichen itza
- xcaret

Do not stop for anyone selling anything......did I mention that?

EK9Hatch
Thanks for the info! :)

k if you want ruins, chitchen itza is gay! they are 100$/person and are not worth it(you cant climb anything anymore). go to the tulum ruins if you want to see some mayan ruins, there you can apparently climb the ruins.; trust me. i have pics of chitchen itza also.

dolphins are cool, very expensive though, 150$/pp. i got some pics if you want to get an idea.

ask the ppl at the resort about the akumal snorkeling lagoon. its awesome! i think its 7$ each to get in and you see tons of colorful fish. your not allowed sunscreen fyi, also bring your own gear. more pics

go to playa del carmen and do some shopping. hit up 5th ave , its like 2km long with just stores/street shops. you can get really good deals if you barder.

also cabs are a rip off. use the collectivo, 2$ each and takes you up and down the main highway along the resorts all the way to playa. ask you hotel guide for more info.

go to tripadvisor.com and read as many reviews on your resort possible. lots of ppl put good tips in their reviews about your specific resort.

have fun!

EK9Hatch
Thanks for the info Kyle! I leave in a few hours....I'm super pumped!
