awkward situation. what should i do? - Click HERE for Original Thread

geno
Last night I got pulled over at 3 in the morning driving my drunk friends home from the bar, i had just got off work. The officer said I was speeding by 20km which is more than likely and asked if i was sure if my car was insured and registered and i said yes.

Turns out my car isnt registered. It experied jan 31st. That was news to me( arent they supposed to mail you something?) and so was it when he said it was a 280$ ticket ( whatever ) and my car gets towed ( thats a problem ).

Anyway he let me go but told me I had to get it registered first thing today and then come visit him at the station to show him or that he would come give me the ticket and tow my car from my place.

SOOOO i went to go register my car and of course i have two speeding tickets i forgot to pay that i have to pay before i can renew my registration and i dont have the cash for that this second.

Whats my best move here?

1) Do not drive the car any further since you now know it's not registered.
2) If you can't come up with the cash immediately (no room on the credit card? no friends/family?) then visit the police officer immediately. Explain to him what has happened and that you can't afford to pay your tickets.

Whatever the officer chooses to do at that point is up to him, but I'm sure being upfront/honest with him is a lot better than avoiding the whole situation and making him look for you.

credit cards are your friend

I just wanted to say, amidst all the crap that happened, kudos to you for being a designated driver and making sure your intoxicated friends got home safely.

That is probably the only reason the cop let you continue driving your drunk friends home.

I agree with Trev, Be up front and honest. If he didn't tow your car that night it won't get towed now, He can still issued the ticket however.

I can't speak for the officer in the case, however, if you go see him and explain your situation and that you are not driving the vehicle untill it is registered you will likely get a stern talking to.

Good luck

Oh yeah, make sure your car is parked on private property, if it 's parked on the street, it could be towed.
