How to get dealer insurance and dealer plate - Click HERE for Original Thread

Austindsm
I always have more than one car and my insurance lady hates me cause i swich my cars around to much. I was wondering if there is a way i can have dealer insurance so i dont have to keep switching insurance.

Do I have to get an AMVIC business license?

Which companys offer this kind of insurance?

How do i get a dealer plate?

And how much would it be roughly?

Just change insurance companies...

I'm with RBC and I seem to end up changing cars every 2-3 months, and my company has never complained once, they're very quick - takes all of 5 minutes over the phone and then I'm driving.

you're not likely to get one. first you need to have a registered business with a business license, then get an amvic lisense. if it is worth all the BS for you the go ahead. or just settle on one car for a while. not to mention dealer plates are not supposed to be used at personal leisure. most cops don't care but you will get nailed one day. i would bet that dealer insurance would cost you considerably more then your regular insurance. plates are 160/year.

does RBC send you new cards, or just send you both of them at once and let you switch with a phone call?

i plan on driving one of my cars 2 days a week and another car 5 days a week, so i hope they dont mind me calling them twice a week to change it. its a hassle for me and them probably, but its what i pay them for, and im not paying for both cars and driving one at a time and realistically only 1 is operated at any given time

^ That's retarded. Insurance companies will fax you a copy of the slip until you get the real one in the mail.

What you do is insure the weekend car as a pleasure vehicle (evenings and weekends) and normal coverage on your beater/daily driver.

So do you cancel your insurance before you go to sleep??

dont most companys want you to insure both vehicles instead of offering such coverages like the pleasure vehicle? when i talked to AMA about this during my renewal, they said it was either i insure 1 car and use it every day, or insure both cars and drive them anytime, there wasnt really anything in between i could do

Then find a new insurance company. Fuck AMA.

The only stipulation for my policy is that I don't take the 240 to work.

With my insurance I have to list one as "commute to work" and one as "pleasure/occasional use". I wanted to list both my cars as "commute to work" and they couldn't/wouldn't do it for some reason.

Our dealer insurance covers personal use.

I was pulled over one night in my 911 because is was after midnight (dark) and was told the the D-plate could only be used during daylight hours (basically business hours) for test drives/ repair test drives.

In the end I went with TD meloche monnex on their "UofA alumni" plan. I am now paying $80 a month for insurance on 2 bmw's and storage insurance on 4 cars - but I'm over 30 and married with children.

A d-plate (m-plate) is not the deal you may think, mine was limited as to maximum value of the vehicle, and could not be used out of province. You will also be paying for a business license and amvic is a pain to deal with. In the end it cost me the same as insuring two cars but I was also selling cars (it really is meant for dealers/ brokers) . It was also difficult to find an insurer as I was ~18 at the time.

My advise - Find a better insurance company, who understand that you are thier customer and you should be able to use your policy as you see fit (within reason, though I would love to hear the "I'm cancelling my insurance because I am about to sleep" call .

^ cops gave you bad advice that is just flat out wrong. Dealer plates can be used whenever provided its for a legit use. i drive cars all the time at night with my dealer plates, so do other dealerships. its perfectly legit to use it at whatever time you want. leaving my shop a few months ago i was pulled over by a cop at 11pmish to check on what i was doing there so late, no issues with me driving the plate.

the poster: you'd be crazy to think its worth it to get a dealerplate. insure both your vehicles with private insurance and save your money.

Geofux
Or in his case .... because it's a Porsche, late at night ... with a dealer plate? ;)

Possibly thinking it was a joyride or something of the sorts, and basically telling him 'not to' because he was 18. :dunno:

The truth is that cops are full of shit on a regular basis, and they will hope that you don't know any better so they can get away with it. I have called cops on BS like this before, asked for their badge number and full name. They usually tell me to have a good night, turn around and walk away.

Being a licensed dealer can be an expensive proposition. My father was once a licensed car dealer and wholesaler. It will basically set you back a few grand to pay for all the nitty gritty fees and courses throughout the process. Dealer insurance isn't as cheap as you think, either.

If you do ever want to be a dealer check out this site:

http://www.amvic.org/

Common questions can be answered here:

http://www.amvic.org/licensing_questions.htm

The beauty of this site is that if you ever get ripped off by a dealer or a salesman posing as an individual you can complain here. You can even look up company names and salesmen on this site to see where they work out of and what courses they have completed (and even when their registration expires).

I've had friends gripe to this site and suddenly the other party wants a refund or a compromise because they don't want their standing affected with AMVIC. Sometimes they don't care but more often than not, they do.
