In Dash Video while driving - Click HERE for Original Thread

I want to get an indash video player so that my son can watch his movies while I am driving. How ever I've heard from a couple people already that most places disable movie mode while the vehicle is moving due to laws in Alberta? Is this true? Would I get pulled over if a police officer happened to see a video playing while I am driving even though it's a kids show while my son is watching? Or should I just buy one of those head rest or on the ceiling mounted dvd players?

Thanks for the backup, chief!

It is illegal in Alberta to have any video screen visible to the driver that is able to play video when the vehicle is in motion. some places might override this feature, but it is against the law for a shop to do that. I've heard that if your in a car accident (your fault or not), and your insurance company finds out that you video monitor in the front is moddified to play while driving, that they will revoke your insurance and not cover you.

Most units on the market have to be hooked up to the e-brake and just need to see ground, some need to see a signal switch from nothing to ground to nothing to ground, alpine units need to be tied into the e-brake and reg brake and a sequence is needed, and most of the new navigation decks have built in sensors that will disable any video playing on the screen when the unit sees motion from driving

That's a lot of typing Shawn!

Great in-depth answer.

what about the in-dash Navi's. isn't it kind of the same situation with a monitor playing something for driver and passenger to see? also cops with there computers right next to their face. what a world...

They are a grey-area in the law. If pulled over for driving with undue care and attention, and your excuse was watching your NAV system, you'll get the same type of ticket.

Under the TSA and its Regs, the only vehicles excempt are law enforcement, who can be viewing their screens (as it provides real-time information to the officer, which is important enough to have an excemption).
