i think ihave the exact same problem in mine...car runs and rev's up fine, but theres just some crazy ticking there whenever its in neutral (i have a manual btw). once the engine is revved even the smallest bit, the ticking goes away. from the sounds of it (for me anyways) it sounds like its coming from the throttle body area...i need help, hahaha.
EDIT: i just watched your video in the link...mine is pretty similar, but no where near as loud. |

mine kinda calms down a little when the car gets to around operating temperature but its still noticeable enough by people outside when i drive around
how loud is yours ticking? is it noticeable with the hood down?
mine's kinda coming from around the manifold/turbo area it seems.. |

| I'm on dialup so I'm not watching a video, but I'm gonna guess it's lifter tick that almost all DSMs have. Either of you have revised lifters and still having the problem? |

| ^i just got a JDM 6Bolt installed on mine and it just came with this ticking...so im assuming to answer your question, no? if it is this lifter tick, is it a big problem? |

| Lifter tick isn't a problem, it's annoying, and people will tell you your car is broken. It can be eliminated with revised lifters, and deminished playing with oil viscosities, additives. And is temperature dependant. |

| yeah I'm aware that the 4g63T has that lifter noise problem and that the 3g lifters is the only "cure" to that.. but this is a whole different ticking that I've never had for the 6 months that I've owned the car, if you watch the video you'll hear what I mean lol |

| it could be your release bearing or something to do with your clutch |

| update: the "tick" goes away(whether on gear or not) when the car reaches normal temperature ON IDLE. but once I put gas and get into lower RPM's where the engine's sound isn't louder than the tick, it's still there.. |

| My dsm has always done that. Eventually you just tune it out. |

Just throwing out some guesses:
Does this car have a cold air intake? I couldn't tell from the video. Removing the stock airbox and inlet causes you to hear more noise from the motor's top end. I thought my car had a detonation problem when I first did the CAI swap.
Next guess: Starting a car in cold weather will activate the fuel enrichment program. This basically drives more fuel into the engine to keep it running before it reaches operating temperature, just like a choke on a carbureted engine. Maybe the increased fuel injector duty cycle is allowing you hear the injectors turn on and off. Properly operating fuel injectors make a ticking noise when they are running.
What is the condition of your vaccuum lines? There are many lines on these 90's cars. When the engine is put under load (i.e. put in drive, accelerating or cruising) more intake manifold vaccuum is generated. This ticking could be coming from a damaged vaccuum line.
Most likely though is ticking hydraulic lifters. If the lifter bores or lifters are worn, they won't automatically expand to remove the slack in the valvetrain. Running the engine for some time will build oil pressure to expand the lifters, and cut down the noise. Try running higher viscosity oil (20W50 for example) or a lifter additive (I've had good results with MOA) next oil change.
Good Luck! |

car runs fine and all still - no sputter, no misfire or anything, its just that damn tick that I cant figure out grr.... any help from the DSM guys here? [/
it might be the rocker arms, try to adjust the valve clearance.. |

| It has hydraulic lifters. |

| Ok in my opinion probably, for the guy who sits in nuetral and it ticks, but once reved that has to be a throwout bearing in the tranny. For the other guy, the lifters are a problem for all DSMs I have 3g Lifters in my car on a rebuilt engine and they still tick in cold weather. If it is coming from the turbo check the turbo. How many miles on the turbo? |
