Warranty: What Voids It? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Exodus
Perhaps I should have asked, what "doesn't?"

There's a few things I'd like to add to the car out of the gate; nothing huge. An intake, new tail lights, strut bar, a spoiler, fog lamps, and maybe some skirts.

each manufacturer will try to make their own rules with respect to warranty claims/voiding.

but as a general rule i always have heard you can mod anything from the air flow meter to the atmosphere and anything from the cat(s) back without worries for intake and exhaust. remember general rule, and if your worried keep the stock stuff and swap it back before taking it to the dealer.

if you put on springs, don't expect your suspension to get covered etc etc

body mods would only matter if your still in bumper to bumper so i say giver, if something breaks there just fix it it hopefully wont be much out of pocket.

there is a defense for tuners that if the mod did not directly cause the problem they cannot void your warranty but i couldnt find it quickly, but with this i think you would need to find out the details before you take it as the rule. My buddies dad is a lawyer and he was chomping at the bit the take a dealer to the top when they were trying to void warranty because of an intake- but the dealer backed down and payed up once he presented his case to them in a very professional and intimidating manner.

my rule, the dealer will look for any reason to fuck you with respect to warranty or any work......so if you want to mod do it up ...but consider you may have to be sneaky and put it back to stock before the dealer see's it or be armed with your rights and ready to negotiate (if your engines dies and they blame it on a catback exhaust for example)

they will probably try to void your claims because they think they can push you over and aftermarket goodies are their easiest way to do this, just be informed and professional and be ready to do some research and maybe even take it over and above the service advisor.

Soo basically if you put a CAI on with a shitty filter and you get sand/dirt/etc in the engine... yeah... don't expect them to fix that :P

If they can prove your mod is the direct cause of the problem, they will not void your warranty persay but may refuse to fix it problem under warranty. trying to think of other examples... if you put in a HUGE stereo and blow your alt/electrical system(btdt on an older vehicle so it can happen)... umm you put on adjustable cam gears, the bolts/nuts whatever that keep it where you set it come loose and a piston slaps a valve or two...

I had a CAI on the wife's car brought it in for engine noise.. cause it was warm they could barely hear the noise I was talking about heard something else said it's probably the "aftermarket induction system" I laughed... booked it in for 3 weeks later again, but I tookt he cai off, but the factory air box back in, but used the aem filter off the cai... towed it in,, fired it up to take it off the trailer with the service advisor there... he almost shit his pants and said yup there's a problem... 3 days later they had a new shortblock installed, no problems.

In reality the chance you will have problems for having mods are limited to whether or not the service advisor/manager likes you or not, its their discretion that matters most.

Any modification can void warranty.
