| Looking for a good shop to get a timing belt replaced and a cv joint. Somewhere that mainly does work on imports. I dont want to take it to a dealership, cause they charge 110 and hour in labour. |

I've been going to Wilson's for years. Good work, fair price.

I don't know this specific shop's rate, but in Edmonton rates are 85-100/hr. Dealers are always more expensive, but 110 actually isn't that bad. I've seen a couple in the 120/130 range.
Probably pick up the timing belt from Napa and order an oem cv shaft online. Check ahead though, a lot of the napa parts are actually oem (cv shaft perhaps) in which case you will save a lot of money. I would never buy parts through a shop, they typically bump up the price 25% over their cost (which really isn't that low). |

| About 180 for both the belt and axel shaft w/ boots from Napa. Would a shop charge that much more? I'm looking to get this done within the next week, so thats why I'm gonna buy local, and I hate dealing with shipping and brokerage. |

Well when I replaced my master and slave cylinder first I phoned Mitsubishi. A new master+slave was $230, and would have to be shipped from Saskatchewan. Then I found out that NAPA supplies the exact same part (OEM), I got both for $80 bucks.
We really get price gouged up here by the dealers. With Mitsubishi its cheaper to buy parts from a dealer in Washington and pay for express shipping and duties, than to buy up here. Not to mention that the Canadian dealers hardly stock any parts for cars more than a couple years old.
$180 seems fair, (although I don't know what car this is for) but phone up whatever shop you plan on using and ask for a quote on parts. Shops do try to make some money on parts but they typically make much more money on the labour, you can quite often haggle with the service manager to get prices down. |

You not only get raped by the shops on parts prices but labour also. I am from the east coast and normal labout rates for a corner garage is about 45 bucks an hour and a dealer might be 65. I am some glad I know how to do my own work. |
