cannot setup home network..... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Blackout-spec
im trying to setup a home network so i can transfer some files back and forth between 2 computers.

I have a network crossover cable and am at the stage of setting up the connection where i run into the problem.
on my desktop i get to the advanced setting under create a new connection, and i can click "connect directly to another computer" ok easy right, well on my notebook, i cannot click that same button " connect directly to another computer".

ive googled and searched computer forums and im getting frustrated.
how to i get this to work so i can transfer some file and reformat my notebook?

also, once ive set up the connection on my desktop and i go t connect,(even though there is no notebook to connect to) it askes me for a user name and password... i did not set a user name or password so what do i do about that?

thanks in advance guys!

more information required. OS like example! Since Vista is a weird animal on its own.

both comps have xp.

its stupid because the windows site makes it sound so easy, if only all the fucking buttons would work!!!

XP home or pro?

Do it manually. Either get a router and go dhcp, or with teh crossed cable set the IP address on one machine to me 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 on the other... then you should be able to ping each machine(you may need to turn off the windows firewall or add file and printer sharing to the exception list.

The you can setup shared folders.. pro is easier as you can turn off simple file sharing and set permissions which make the setup easier

well one computer is media edition and one is pro.
i have a router, but im trying to bypass it and just use the crossover cable

how do i set the ips?
and how do i ping the comps?
ill google i guess.

Control Panel -> Network Connections
Right Click Local Area Network Connection -> Properties
Select TCP/IP -> Properties
Select "Use the following IP Address"
Enter 192.168.0.1 for PC one w/ Subnet 255.255.255.0
Enter 192.168.0.2 for PC two w/ Subnet 255.255.255.0

Ok/Apply windows. Check Windows Firewall in control panel. Disable it.

Open my computer on one of the PC's and type \\192.168.0.2 (address of the other computer)

^ ok i got all that done, but it askes me for a username and password. i never set one.

i just click connect and it tries, then i get "the remote computer did not respond"

any ideas?

also for this method, do i direct the computers together? or just connect to the internet on both computers and use that as my network?
