anyone know roughly how much it wud cost me to bore out a 7m-gte and port and polish the head? im only looking for estimates. unless u know. and anyone know a good place to go in edmonton? i know of 1 place lol near 156 st and off yellowhead

port and polish can be very expensive and is not overally need on the 7m-gte head. At best do it ur self and just remove the imperfections in the head to help it flow better. Your money for a port and polish job could probaly be better spent else where.

As for boring out i can't remeber What I payed for mine but phone all the machine shops and most should be able to get you a price over the phone.

EC automotive is like $25 a cylinder the last time i went there.

you can do it yourself with simple tools at home.

for a first time sport job there is a few things to keep in mind. Like people that make a living porting heads like to stick with a certain head because it takes years of experience trying to perfect the shape for that specific head, not to mention expensive wet flow benches to get perfect. Some crap shop with a grinder may not be a wise idea.

So that being said if you where to attempt it yourself dont expect drastic power improvements on your first attempt and dont try to go to big. Just smooth the porting to take away abrupt direction changes to flow or just try to gasket match the manifold to the head. And concentrate the first 1/2" around the valves on the combustion chamber, lots of power to free up there for many engines. Search the net to see what others have done at home and always cross reference that with a few sites if possible.

Tools needed are a high-speed rotary tool (not a dremel, bigger), lots of grinding stones, spare valves for working around the combustion area. this stuff can be had for under 200 usually and doesnt really take to long for each cylinder.

Ive ported a few heads through the years and its really not hard just dont go to far or the flow will be totally different through each cylinder and probably run like crap. but Im a ford guy so what do i know anyway.

have you ever flow tested your engine after you did it yourself? I know that in edmonton nobody is able to do a proper port and polish for an h22. They already flow so well from the factory people have only damaged the flow and it results in a loss of power.

I am in no way claiming you don't know what you are doing. Just stating what i have found to be true with my engine.

what he said

also remember that they will charge you to deck the block which they usually always do as well as cleaning after the work is done.

for the most part, they only do the work that the customer asks for, but they also prefer to work with a clean block rather then a rusty boat anchor so its really understandable

25$ per cylinder for porting, i would be scared to see the results.

I have spent hours on one port, never mind the fact that you need to dissasemble the head completely to do it correctly. There is a lot of theory involved with port shaping.

My advice would be this, nice and simple, do a gasket match to the head and manifolds, go no further than about 1 1/2'' into the ports, and then send out the ex mani, intake mani and head to be extrude honed. Dont get too brave with the gasket matching either, keep it mild.

I usually do it to ford heads and they dont flow evenly to start with all i was trying to stress is little is more for a home job or you will screw it up. Id personally be amazed if it wasnt ugly on a flow bench.

I kinda figured, though you have to realise the title had a comment about boring and the thread itself did not.
