Car audio retard needs advice - Click HERE for Original Thread

RSready
The previous owner of my car installed a Rockford sub and amp and for some reason both seem to have no power. I'll admit that I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to car audio.

All the wiring looks correct and in decent shape. There is a big fuse coming off the battery and it looks OK. Are there any other 'usual suspects' that I can check, so that I don't have to take it in somewhere?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

check the fuses on the amp and the connection to the battery. also check and make sure the ground wire is grounded and the remote wire is connected properly

And if the amp light still doesn't come on. Make sure the remote wire is still hooked up at the amp @ the deck. Alot of people just twist wires together, than electrical tape it. Bastards too lazy to solder!

u have to use a 9 volt battery and test the remote wire ( with on stereo) and cable battery for amps. and if u see spark then theres no problem with the wiring. .i suspect that ur amps. might be blown..

platnum accord
dont use a 9 volt battery. i would let someone who knows a few things about car audio look at it before taking a chance and possibly blowing up the amp with something stupid. BUY A MULTI-METER!!! take some readings and go from there.

Multi meter is o.k but some people they dont know how to use it.. u just test the wire in a seconds if theres a power will go though, im not talking about the amps.. i used to intalled amps and deck without a guide sucket wire esp. domestic car. its not that easy search the positive wire for speaker without a sucket..

platnum accord
it is actually. thats how it is done. not with a 9 volt.

wait are we talking about the speaker leads or about the amp and its related wires...?

speakers yes you can use both and both work almost equally except the 9volt will give audiable feeback, wher the MM will just return relative ohm load, not position.

i didnt think this was about speakers, just about the amp and sub, maybe i misread.

What I would recommend doing is picking up a cheap test light, of course a "cheap" test light wont tell you if you have a ground or not, and test the power wires on the amp. Or like platnum accord said use a multimeter. Both will work very well. And if you have + where you need +, and - where you need -, theres a good chance your amp is screwed or the fuses on it are blown. If you don't have power where you need it, go through the install and see if anythings grounding out on metal (ground doesn't matter but still). If you don't see or find anything wrong then i would recommend bringing it to a shop to get it checked out. Generally should take the average installer about 10-20 minutes to look over everything.
And remember if you don't feel comfortable doing it, don't do it. It will just lead to bigger problems if you screw stuff up.
