I am Looking to purchase a 500GB harddrive - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
I am looking to purchase a 500GB hard drive.

I am undecided if I want an internal or an external one.

All I need it for is to store information I have downloaded then to make a back up of the “originals” to a DVD.

What type, brand, place, price and why?

Memory Express or A-Computers (A-Computers is like $5 more than Memory Express). Seagate Barracuda. why? cause for myself and many others I know, the Barracuda's treated us all VERY well. Price depends on if you need a IDE or SATA one. SATA is nicer, Barracuda with 32MB Cache instead of 8MB or 16MB. About $120 I'm thinking its at. :dunno: Dont quote me on that price

Seagates also have 5yr warranties.

Get the seagate drive then if you want pick up a nexstar 3 case to put it in if you want it to be external - they have 1394/USB2/ and Esata connectors on some.

The shells are about $40-$50
the drive is $105 from MemX SEAGATE 500GB Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II w/ NCQ, 32MB Cache

Seagate is my personal preference, although alternatively I could also see myself using Western Digital drives, they're usually a bit cheaper of late.

Most manufacturers have moved to 5-year warranty, and pricing is about the same across the board, it just depends what you like.

Last I checked(it's been a couple months) Western Digi dropped their 3yr warranty to a 1yr, and Maxtor switched from 3yr on the higher end drives to a 1yr.

I used to buy only Maxtor, then I had a bunch die, so I switched to Western Digi... then they dropped the warranty to 1yr, so I went to Seagate... I haven't had a Seagate die yet *knock on wood*

WD Raptor, Raptor-X, and ES drives are all 5-year warranty. Caviar SE/16 drives are 3 years.

Maxtor was purchased by Seagate, and will carry the same 5-year warranty as Seagate drives.

Damn companies.. can't make up their mind.. Western Digi went back to the 3yr Aug 2007...

As per Rob. This is the set up I did and its awesome. Cost me about $150 total.
"You can pick up a 500GB Western Digital hard drive from Memory Express (www.memoryexpress.com) they're on the southside 34ave and 99st...

You can pick up an enclosure if you so choose, they range in price from $40-$80, depending on what you want... Advantage to having the 500GB in an external enclosure means you can just plug it in your USB port on your PC instead of tearing it down and installing the drive permanently..."

Graphicdude
Costco had 1 TB Western Digital for 400 bucks. I have one at home and a Seagate 750MB at work, really awesome products. Either of them you will more than happy with.

I am purchasing an internal SEAGATE 500GB Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II w/ NCQ, 32MB Cache from memory express. $104.95

Thanks Malaria for the hookup.

How is that a "hookup" when it's a publicly advertised product?

If he purchased it with his employee discount and then sold it to you at a fraction of the cost - then it would be a hookup.

I provided the link to memory express as that is where I am purchasing the product.

I did not say how the product is purchased.

I do not disclose details of what I consider to be a hook up.

Thanks everyone for the input.

You just said you're purchasing the product from MemX... That looks like full disclosure to me. Unless you mean you're purchasing it in the parking lot?

I'm telling!!

If I hadn't been having one of my PMS days... I could've "hooked you up" with the one sitting in my desk drawer collecting dust.
