| In my opinion, stay away from Sony. Alpine makes great decks  |

I realize a deck is not too be used for a susbestiute for an amp but now a days all these decks have some pretty crazy power outputs(45Wx4, 50WX4 and even some with 60+) my friend had a very old one with 40Wx4 and switched to a 52X4 and notice alot better sound out put.
now based on that what our some good decks?? |

In my experience:
Panasonics are built like tanks.
I had a Panasonic that I bought in 1999 that went in and out of three different cars and it will still going when I sold the car it was in last year. |

Unless you are running components, these aftermarket decks have more power output than most any oem decks.
Just get an amp for a sub and turn the bass down on the speakers. |

Big 2nd.
And especially if you're an ipod man. Their ipod interface is super-slick. |

| The only nod I will give Alpine over Pioneer is the Ipod interface. Alpine really nailed that one, but from basiclly every other stand point I would say pioneer is a better unit. |

Panasonic is my personla favourity..
However there is a JVC that has a 3.5" screen in it.. It may even be smaller. I just like the layout of the deck haha. Useless for videos but its a sick deck. |

Yeah! Me too. Panasonic is my perfect preference for years now! I really like its excellent performance. I even choose it over Sony by my cousin!

You'll probably find as many opinions out there as there are models of deck. Most people will like what they have.
I have an Alpine CDA-9885. I bought it when my old Apline, as well as my amp rack was thoughtfully removed by some dirtbag last fall. I am currently running it on its own amplifier, since I haven't had time to rebuild my amp rack.
The internal amplifier SUCKS. Okay, it's better than stock, and it's at least as good as many others that I've heard out there, but after getting used to my old amp (Which was, by the way rated at 40W/channel) it blows chunks. I think that if the deck power had to be HONESTLY rated, they wouldn't be talking about any 45W/channel. I'd think that 12-14W is probably more realistic and fair.
Now, on topic...
If you're looking for a deck, the FIRST step is to determine what features you must have, what features you'd like to have and if there's anything that you don't want.
Features that you might look for:
- Pre-outs. Triple pre-outs are generally at the high end, some are even 5.1.
- High voltage pre-outs. Higher voltage means better signal to noise ratios. Many decks have 0.5V pre-outs. This is pretty standard. Some have 4V and some even have as high as 6.8V. If it's important to you, look for it.
- DVD playback. Do you want to add video?
- MP3 playback. Will you be using CDs filled with .mp3 files?
- iPod connection.
- USB port for audio or video files.
- CD/DVD changer controller.
- Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone integration.
- Sattelite Radio controller.
- Security. Most stereos come with a detachable face, but there are some that need a code, or a "key" CD in order to reactivate them after power has been disconnected. If it's important to you, it's a good idea.
- 24bit DAC. How serious are you about wanting REALLY good sound. (Most CD players will have a 1bit DAC.) DAC=Digital Analogue Converter.
After that, are you looking for a recognised brand name? Something that has prestige in the audio circles? Are you looking to compete in sound-offs?
Decide what you need from a deck, and what you want.
My deciding factors were:
Triple high-voltage pre-outs.
MP3 playback
Those were what made me decide on my original Alpine CDA-9811 (Which was stolen) I then replaced it with the closest model that had the features that I was looking for, which is the CDA-9885.
In addition to the features that I had, I also got iPod connectivity, (Additional cable. Free from Crutchfield with promo.) bluetooth (Additional adapter, purchased at additional cost.) and a bunch of other things that I could care less about. |
