As the title states.
I don't want to go too crazy, but I don't buy crap regardless of what it is.
I want it just for trails in the mountains and local stuff.
Thanks |

Yeah I figured United Cycle and Costco, but I was wondering if maybe there were some "hidden gem" with good prices and service as well.
Anything special I should look for? I know dick all about bikes. |

| Mountain bikes? Christ its been like 15 years since I bought one. My suggestion is to go to United Cycle tell them what you want and let them pick a few models out for you. Then go somewhere else and do the same thing. Treat the same way you would when buying a car :) |

If you want a quality MTB that won't need to have adjustments made every ride or have your fork crap out on you and bottom out after a few weeks of hard riding(especially in the mountains)...don't buy crap from Costco, Sport Mart, Sport Check etc. Since you didn't specify price, don't cheap out. It's like you'd be buying a car, you wouldn't buy cheap quality parts now would you? And who knows, maybe one day you'll want to start hitting some parks, drops, dirt jumps etc...
Stick to United Cycle, Western Cycle, Revolution Cycle (on Stony Plain rd...awesome shop), Velocity Cycle and Sports Shack. You looking at getting a hardtail or soft-tail? Check out some of the shops I mentioned and look around, find what suits you best. Keep in mind though, cheapest you can go with a quality and somewhat more durable MTB (Norco, Specialized, Trek, Kona, Rocky Mountain, Vera Cruz etc.) will be around 700-800 bucks.
Bought this baby around two years ago for 1500 at United Cycle...'06 Norco Manik.

Best bike I've had yet. Has taken mild abuse in the parks, ravines and dirt jumps of Edmonton. Just not a bike I'd recommend for simple commuting/cruising. She's heavy and has tires wider than an early 90s Tercel...  |

i suggest river valley cycle and snowboards, for 2 reasons.
http://www.rvcns.com
1) quality products and quality service, they know what they are doing and have been around edmonton for at least 15 years (they were on whyte by the bridge, then argyll-75 st, now on 50 st and 67ave ) - i got my first mtn bike there in the early 90's.
2) shop grand reopening is next weekend (april 4-6) they unfortunately had a fire at the argyll loc last year and have been working feverishly to find/start and rock a new location. this grand opening will probably have great deals and by going there it will help keep a local business on the map. I personally have held off buying some snowgear this season just waiting for them to get back on their feet, so i can show my support!!!!
they have bikes and boards for any person/condition and most prices, i will mention that i think their prices are very competitive they will be more than costco/cdn tire/ sport check mart etc etc- but you will be getting a great solid product made by Kona or rocky mountain or other top lines, not some cheap heavy crap.
i think they are open already but the grand opening is next weekend, check it out!!! |

Awesome.
Thanks guys. This is exactly what I was looking for.
I'm expecting to spend around 6-800 and hopefully I can get a pretty decent bike. |

Pedalhead. These guys are really honest. I wont shop at Rev Cycle or UC anymore. They've become too chain-store like. Pedalhead is only a small store, they wont rip you off, and they only sell the good stuff. Also, UC and Rev will find a bke for what you want, Pedalhead will get you onto a bike and find something that fits you. Every bike is built differently. You might not like stretching out, or bending more.
Also, anybody that is into Mountain Biking, every Wed at 6:00, they go for group rides. On average 40-50+ people come out. Split into groups based on skill, and go for a 3-4 hour ride. It is a lot of fun.
For 600-800, you can prolly get a pretty good Gary Fisher or Giant.
I got my Scott from them, and my Fisher before it. |

Cranky's (St. Albert) or Velocity cycle gets my vote.
Both great shops/people. |

| I would vote either RiverValleyCycle or United Cycle like previously mentioned. Either place gives definate quality you'd be looking for, and also good customer service. If you have any problems, they are on top of it... Also I have never come across an unknowledgable worker at either store. |

| Kind of a related question. I was looking into getting a bike and the purpose would be for both riding to work and recreational/mountain bike type use. Is there something in between as I kind of realize these are two different types of bikes/setups. :dunno: |

If your just getting into trail(off) riding, I would definately recommend a hard-tail. It will be much easier for you to ride as a soft-tail will take away some weight being put on the rear wheel. Disks are not necessary unless your really going to be into the trails often, and if you will also ride in wetter conditions.
A Fisher Wahoo, or Marlin would be my recommendation. est bang for the buck, and those two are not very expensive. They are offered with or without disks (about $90 difference with disks). You will get the basic Deore derailleurs, wich are good reliable, and smooth. |

I second river valley cycle and snowboards. Also, I would suggest Hardcore Bikes on white ave, good service but smaller selection.
As for a choice of bike: depending on your budget, try to get a light full suspension bike even if you plan to ride XC trails. Makes a big difference in the overall enjoyment on longer rides.
Edit: you can't get a quality bike for under $1000, sorry. Not a mountain bike. Drive train will be shit, suspension will be shit with little if any adjustments, and the wheels will have weak rims. Not something you'd want to take to the mountains. |
