| Hot-rodding a D17A, should it be done? - Click HERE for Original Thread |

| I'm looking into modding my 2004 Civic coupe, but a K-swap sounds pretty intense and money consuming. I dropped by Speedtech and the Honda guy stated that they could do everything required for a K-Swap for roughly 10-12Gs. :( Should I just save up for that? Or is it possible to squeeze more performance from a stock D17 motor? :dunno: I've heard that it's hard to get those engines to relenquish more power.:mad: Are there aftermarket bolt-ons available for that engine? And what about modding the ECU on that generation civic? If nothing's possible than I'll buck-up and save for the K-Swap, but I want to look at other options first. Granted, I could probably find a skyline for that kind of money, or maybe even a GTO (there's one in the Edmonton Journal classifieds for 10Gs) but I'm a 7th gen Civic fan, and I can't handle a right-hand drive:blink: So any help / suggestions would be appreciated:fingersx: |

i cant really see a K-swap costing 10-12k. maybe if they were to use a K20-R motor then i can see that, but for a regular K20, the swap should be around 8k or so.
you can probably turbo the D17 for roughly $1500 if you do most of the work on your own, but if you let others do it for you, it might cost quite a bit more |

| Why not just buy an rsx :dunno: |

| Yeah I can't justify a swap for 10 gs. May as well buy an already modified car and have two. I would just turbo it, you'll be happy with it for a while, and it will only cost you $2000 - $3000 for a good job. |

Sign up on www.d-series.org and look in the 7th gen Section... They'll have WAY more info than anyone on this site... Don't even bother asking anymore questions on here, because you won't get very good answers...
I'm not hating on this site,.. I'm just stating that there aren't many 'Honda Guys' on this site, and furthermore.. Not many 7th Gen Guys either... so.. You'd be Way better asking motor questions on that other site. :thumbup: :thumbup: |

| I'll just toss this out there... probably not the best platform to start with unless you're rich, I would sooner sell your car and buy kornsined's k20 turbo swapped 04 coupe seeing as he dropped all the money already lol |

Or visit www.civicforums.com there are a shit ton of 7th gen guys on these voardsa and they can help you out. I know you can do some to the D17 like a turbo kit, and some beefier internals. I use to drive an 03 LX. Looked at the possibility myself. There is a guy from Transform Spoilers who turboed his 7th gen. Pretty cool and he gained some good HP. I believe he topped out at 200 RWHP. Bit I could be wrong. In any case try this forum. Lots of guys that have done the same thing you are thinking about. |

| save your money and buy a better car. by the time you save 10-12g's for a K-series swap you'll probably be into some else anyway. |

I thought D17A1 s couldn't handle more than 6 or 7 psi boost? I'd be happy with a turbo if I can really get 300+ whp @ 14 psi. |

| You won't get 300 whp out of that engine unless you do some major build up. I remember most turbo kits were hitting 170-190whp safely on that engine. d17 = weak sauce. |

Looked at some threads at Honda-Tech and I might be actually going for a turbo setup instead. The D17 might be weak without a build-up, but if a build-up is less than a K20A1 swap, I'm willing to learn the stuff for it. I've been tinkering with my car on a daily basis...:fingersx: |

Bah, forget that, I'd still have to pay exorbant amounts of money to a machine shop to build up the engine, and I'd have an engine that I couldn't use as a daily driver.
I guess I should just turbo it and have a little fun with 190 hp
Looks like I'm saving money for a K-swap... time to get a higher-paying job :lol:

P.S. Isn't the K20A3 engine for auto tranny? And its 160 hp stock ain't it? I'm looking to swap in a K20A1, which if i remember correctly is 205-220 hp stock. |

K20A3= 160 hp
K20k2= 220hp
But isn't 220hp still like 190 whp? |

Does it work for the D17A1? :fingersx: It'd be nice to have a bit of power increase while I'm saving up for the K20A1...:dunno: |

| I think you should just buy kornsined's car, maybe you dont realize it will end up costing you way more money in the end than buying his car. but good luck with that. |

| Umm maybe I should look at your car anyways. I wanna ask you though, I'm sure the K20A3 isn't 220 hp stock. That's the K20A1. I still wanna look at your car though. It might save me money in the time being. The only thing is, it's not my build. It yours. But w/e. Even if I don't buy your car, I still wanna see what you were able to do with it. |

The k20a3 was either 5spd or auto. It came in the RSX base model and the 02-05 Civic SIR hatch (slight differences though) Rated 160hp (typically 135whp). K20a2 was 200hp (175-180whp), K20z1 210hp (190whp). The k24a2 is better IMO. More torque.
BTW, what's this k20a1 you speak of? Kseries info |

K20A, my mistake lol there is no number after the "A" lol, that's why you're telling me about the K20Z1 lol
K20A found in JDM Type R Civics
Displacement: 1998 cc
Compression: 13.7:1
Power: 222 bhp (225 PS, 165 kW) @ 8000 rpm

Great engine if you can get your hands on one. $$$$ last time I checked.
I'd do some searching on k20a.org and k-series.com for deals. Even clubrsx.com might be worth a try.
Also join civicforums.com and em2ab.com if you haven't yet. |
