St. Albert passes 'anti idling' law - Click HERE for Original Thread

ehos
Blah blah blah, you can only idle 3 minutes out of one hour unless its' very hot/cold. $100 fine, $10K spent on awareness campaign, and 5K/year to maintain it. Passed 4-2 in council. One of the very few places to have such legislation.

...

IMO, I don't think it will do 'anything', BUT, I gotta give props for doing 'something'. It just goes to show how avante garde our communities are sometimes.

chris f
ottawa has it as well edmonton is looking in to it as well.

Someone give me one good reason whu you have to let your car or truck idle for any amount of time. shut it off when you come out of what your doing start it again. the only thing i can see is service trucks that need to run a pto or compressor.

you have to idle several times more than that just trying to get through this fuckin city because the lights aren't timed worth a shit. If they are serious about it then retime the lights during peak hours to eliminate stop/starts on major roads, which is when the most fuel is used and emissions are created. Thats just my opinion and the opinion of many others

And then you have the idiots that think the longer they let there car idle in the winter in the mornings.. the quicker it will warm up. It's like saying.. if you just stand there with your jacket.. you will warm up quicker than to go for a jog.

Its more like when I get in it, it is warm no waiting;)

Ruiner
starting/stopping your vehicle 3 times is harder on the engine, than idling for 15 minutes. as well it uses more fuel that way.

I think it is refering to when you go into a store and you leave your car running or you start your car and head inside. both things I don't see the point of, but I'm worried I'm going to come out and the car won't be there.

who cares thats what insurance is for:fingersx:

Ruiner
a vehicle "locked" and running which was stolen could be classed or investigated as an insurance scam

SilverNeonRacer
Soo what if you're waiting inline for the car wash or drive through? gotta shut it off or what? Does St Albert even have bylaw officers to issue tickets on this?

Most insurance companies won't pay out if the key was in the vehicle.

remote start for the win.. set at 15min by default.

You know they can suck an egg for all I care, my wife used to let her car idle all afternoon(go out and start it at lunch, forget to go turn it off) would be nice and toasty warm when it was time to drive home though... I got her a remote start so hey 15 or 30min is nothing compared to 4 hours... also if my vehicle isn't warm enough to keep the windshield defrosted.. I don't drive, I let it idle so i can actually see where I'm going.

Ruiner
might they try to pass a subclause where everyone is forced to use incar heaters?

as well.. its spring now, dont need to idle every day.. especially when its only -1 or above.

silvermist
I don't think it counts if you are at a light or waiting in a line up but really if the line up is that long shut the car off, I would with gas prices as high as they are now why waste any more of it, but I can see the R.C.M.P in st.albert milking it for all its worth. they are dicks in st.albert. they probably have hired a couple more people to just drive around and look for idling cars.

Ruiner
so.. you'll see a cop at every tim hortons 24/7 from now on?

Blackout-spec
i dont know about St. Albert, but Edmonton needs to focus on getting the roads in a better condition for driving before they even worry about emissions.

i know what they are refering to. but what i said still stands. people letting their cars idle for long periods to warm up or when going into stores is still much less than people getting stopped at EVERY FUCKIN LIGHT.

its so frustrating stopping every block, uses more gas, brakes wear faster, clutch if its a standard, etc. more emissions, more potential for accidents. would be better for everyone if they timed the lights properly.

i think its something that they will enforce for a little while, and then since they are already overwhelmed with other dumb shit to enforce it will soon be ignored, like half the other bylaws out there.

I agree with you on that one the lights and the roads such ass in edmonton. hell st.albert trail or what ever that raod is called now from 137th to yellowhead has so many pot holes and raised ridges it is like going off roading. and I think when they start enforcing it so many people are going to fight the tickets they are going to sart ignoring the bylaw because of the hassle. until they want to be dicks at the end of the month so they can meet there quota.

onestepback
I won't stop idling my car until they make the photo radar vans turn their engines off. How many times do you drive by and see them just sitting there idling?!? When they turn off, I will.

/rant.

STiPWR
It will be enforced about as well as the cell phone law is.

There's a cell phone law?

ehos
If the RCMP pulls you over, turn off your car. I guess they could tack on another $100 if you let your car idle??

And does this apply to the cops/photoradar (as stated above)??

What's the cell phone bylaw?

I don't think so!

AuZZZie
So can you just blip your throttle every 2:59? Your no longer idiling..

Fuck they focus on the completely wrong areas. Like someone already said, fix your cluster fuck traffic lights. No major city should still have as many timed lights as Edmonton does, they should be sensors.

I know this law was fro St Albert but obviouslly Deadmonton is thinking about it too.

Not in alberta, but 15 states in the US are enforcing partial bans of cell phones in vehicles. They have talked about banning them in alberta.......Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland have made it law........Just saying it's going to be hard to enforce.

We have the no cell phone law in Aussie. It's enforced HARD. To the point where it's just not worth the risk of trying..

So it can be done. Edmonton of all places shouldn't be allowed cell phones in the car.

Everytime someone cuts me off or I see a wanker move I always try pre guess the driver. 9/10 its an Old person, someone on a cell phone... Or a couple of others but I'll leave it there..

I agree with you 100%. And go on msn foo

ChromeDragon
Tiny drop in a bucket when it comes to the actual emissions of this province. They're too afraid to force industry to do something about their insane amounts of emissions, so once again they pick on the little guy.

RangerMan
you can probably bet ur ass that the police in stalbert will enforce it too...

being in the top 10 of safest cities in canada..they sometimes are bored outa their mind

i just dislike the deisel trucks in the morning..

How is it St Albert, 10min away from Edmonton, Is one of the safest city's in Canada.

Yet Edmonton is rated as the most dangerous city in Canada.

Fuck you'd think EPS and RCMP or whoever polices St Albert could meet up for a coffee and discuss tactics or something.

Geofux
When we drove through St. Albert at previous meets it seemed the roads were pretty good as well.

They definitely have more going for them than Edmonton :p

That law won't work, and if it as brought to Edmonton, the same issues spoke of here should arise and take the forefront, not that they will, but they should.

It's not just the police, it's the community and the bylaws. No pawnshops, no 'objectionable' vendors etc etc. People make about 100K/year as the average salary (!). No slummy areas (well, Grandin is as 'bad' as it gets, and it's probably comparable to 'riverbend' in Edmonton).

All valid points.. But i obviouslly wasn't serious about solving crime over a tactic sharing coffee..

Edmonton isn't the most dangerous and it's only a couple of really bad areas that bring our ranking so low.

Will RCMP photoradar have to follow this?
and what temp does the very hot/ very cold deem it allowable to idle for over 3 mins?

EK9Hatch
I think its a great idea, but honestly can't see it getting enforced very much.

That is my question as well. You see cops leaving their cars idling in parking lots while they are stopping for lunch. You see photoradar vans idling all the time. Are they going to be exempt? If so, that's bullshit.

GOT BOOST

All I can say is good luck enforcing it.

The city must be hard up for cash if they are trying to implement a new tax..cough.. I mean law.

Perhaps with the new found revenue we can place a giant baseball on the North side of 118 Ave and East of 97 st to complement the waste of the baseball bat. Or the city can vote to give them selves raises for another job well done.

I'm pretty sure it was your news paper that I got that stat from.. :D

tokes
I don't think the point is so much to give a ton of tickets for it, more just to let people know that they need to cut down on idling and hope that with this being a bylaw that most of the normal people in St. Albert will cut down on idling just because it's law :dunno:

Inzane
So with this law in St. Albert, what if you have a car stored over winter that you periodically start up? Or if you're starting up a newly built engine? Or you're running diagnostics in your garage that require either idling or holding the throttle?

Are these people all fucked then? :dunno:

Of course not. You'll just need an exemption pass from the registry.. All for the low price of $99.99

silvermist
it isn't one of the safests in canada. althought I do feel safe in st.albert but I rew up in st.albert. I also don't see edmonton as being on the most dageriuos list it's not like I hear gun shots everynight hell I haven't even heard a gun fired in the city. the worst thing I ever had happen when I lived in edmonton was some doush bag threw a beer bottle at my car. If our city is that dangerous then when I go to calgary I exspect an episode of the sound of music where the birds are singing the theme song and everyone is smiling and curtious. I do agree there are a lot of stupid people in edmonton that do stupid shit ( ie the whyte ave. bs.) but I contribute alot of that ot people who moved here from another province that give to shits about this city and just trash it because they are not from here.

bboybean
I just read about this in the Gazette , All I have to say is "I dont give a shit", I dont go through drive throughs (dont eat fast food) and I dont drive a diesel, I also dont have a starter. I dont thinks its even going to be that big of a deal . On paper it looks ghey but I dont think its going to affect me very much , I also dont think its a very enforcable by-law or it will really do shit about emissions.

:dunno: fuk it
