car plans for the coming year... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey everybody,
I'm just curious what sort of car plans people have for the coming year...
Mine are to first get a car.  <!--emo&???--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->
anyone care to share?

(sorry if this has been posted before)

I just want a car!  I'm thinking of a Celica GTS but I don't think you can get much styling out of it.  Only thing is some TRD stuff, but thats it.

I wonder if you could TC or SC the thing.

CYA
for mine all i'm doing is... fixing a lifter tick... rewiring engine bay (cosmetics only)... new electronic fuel pressure guage... electric fan... re route fuel lines... replace starter... that's about it.  nothing crazy.  just a bunch of smaller things although it does seem to be time consuming.  <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->

Loose
RX-7
Definetly: _Getting my name on the pink slip, finally
Maybe: _Springs, shocks, remove emissons equipment, ghetto BOV mod, electric fan, R compound tires on spare wheels

Buick
Definetly: _Ball joints
Maybe: _NOS kit (borrowed) just to put the sick car to sleep/science project <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

I'd do more to the 7, but I'd like to get a house too:(

<!--EDIT|Loose|Feb. 06 2002,10:58-->

Marximus
New seats, coilovers, headlights, and harnesses.

Then LSD and finally tuning.  Should keep me busy.

If I get bored I'll get some R compounds and wheels.

BlueTurboEGG
Currently on the tap: New manifold, Rebuilt Turbo, New end tanks on the IC, cleaning up the install, finding where all those loose bolts in the bucket go...

Next: Coil-overs on my new shocks, Sway Bars, 6 pt harness, adj. back Seats, NHRA legal alum. battery box, battery disconnect mounted behind the stock fuel filler door, make interior pretty.

Possible: Roll cage, diffusers under car.

CYA
don't forget to keep that battery disconnect switch readily accessible or you still won't pass tech.

Hey, what is a diffuser? _I'm not familiar with that term. _<!--emo&:D--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

This I gotta hear more about...

VR666
Install the supercharger, some 17" or 18" wheels, and coilovers.

Hey Loose how about a SC Buck Skyhawk <!--emo&:0--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'><!--endemo-->

BlueTurboEGG
Well, for the battery disconnect, I'm looking to make the fuel filler door detachable, so when I'm ready to race, I'll just pull it off. Hopefully that will be enough to let me pass tech.

As for diffusers, I've been mulling over this idea of having "covers" unerneath the car like the Skylines. It'd definitely be a late winter project lining up the right sizes and stuff, then come spring, I'd use fibreglass to give it some strength.

Just a kooky idea from a guy with too much time, too many ideas and not enough cash.

Loose
Andy, I'm familiar with 4 and 5 point harnesses, but where does the 6th belt go? <!--emo&???--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->

VR666, when you come back to Canada, we will destroy the Buick.

BlueTurboEGG
The  anti-sub strap is split into two seperate belts so rather than crashing your garbage out the back of your pelvis, you "go through" relatively unharmed...

goto this site with IE only:

<a href="http://www.momo.it/momoeng/set1.html" target="_blank">http://www.momo.it/momoeng/set1.html</a>

click "Momo Course" along the bottom, then click "Racing", use the quick drop menu and select "Safety Harnesses" then up comes a nice pic of a 6 pt. harness.

Sounds safer to me...

RX_AGENT
For my RX-7 -cone filter and cold airbox
                -air pump removal
                - 5th and 6th actutators wired open
                -clutch replacement
                -Wings West front air dam and side skirts
                  (just to cover up some nasty dents)

Pending - Tokico shocks/struts
          -  Intrax lowering springs

VR666
Hey Loose
I'll be going back around the beginning of August.  What do you have planned for the Buck?  I don't think anybody has a NOS nozszle small enough for the Buck.  Even a 50hp shot would be doubling the HP.

Just a question for everyone.  Are 5 point seat belts compatible with most reclining seats?  I want to install a aftermarket seats, but I also want 3" belts instead of the smaller ones. Also do you need a harness bar for those belts?

BlueTurboEGG
Yes, the seat belts are compatible with reclinables. You're biggest challenge will be to find someplace to bolt the shoulder straps to in the back <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I think it's something like no more than 45 degrees or something more or less than 45, it won't restrain you properly.

VR666
BlueTurboEgg

I'm thinking of removing the rear seats.  Install a bar across the shock towers at the back.  Then attach the belts to that.  Do you think that'll work. <!--emo&???--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->

Things to consider about harnesses, if you don't have a rollcage it's not recommended.  In the event of a rollover, your planted in the back of your seat and your head is the first thing that will hit because you can't duck.

VR666
I think most people install harnesses because they want to be held firmly in their seat during aggresive driving.  I don't think a regular belt is much better in the event of a roll over.  I'll still be using my regular belts for most of my driving. I'm trying to stay away from a roll cage, cause I still want to use my back seats sometimes.

BlueTurboEGG
I've seen people use the stock rear mount for the rear passenger seat belt as a mounting point for the harness.

If you're going to use your rear strut tower brace I'd take a closer look at it's design. It's it's just a thick pipe with no adjustable ends then go for it, if it does, I'd think twice about it...

I think harnesses provide way more safety over the regular seatbelt because they are overdesigned when compared to the stock units.

I'm talking about the really good ones made by someone like Leaf Racewear (Canadian manufacturer) not those ricey ones. The fact that you can nearly instanly release the harness straps is good too, those duckbill style belts simply fly apart!. I ordered a Camlock myself.

And in the event of a rollover... well, whether or not you have a rollcage, you're still going to end up with your head being the first thing getting hit. Stock lap belts don't offer you that much movement either.

You can still have a somewhat decent rollcage and usable rear seat too, not sure if it can be NHRA cert. though, I'd have to ask my fabricator. I've seen rollcages that hug the interior contours and maximize space.

Loose
My 2 cents:

I'd take a stock 3pnt belt over an aftermarket 4,5,6 point harness not attached properly.

I have seen many people bolt into the hooks for the rear seat cusions (for fold down seats). _What the hell was this guy thinking? _That _a little clip designed to hold a 3 lb seat cusion will hold himself in a severe accident? _

These belts are also much more time consuming to put on, you have to tighten each strap each time you buckle the camlock, otherwise your not using it properly. _This inconvenience deters proper use. _

Maybe harnesses are the latest rice for people who can afford more than a "Type R" seatbelt pad.

Really, all I'm saying is do your research first, don't mess with your safety.

VR666, I think for our race car we paid $300 for a certified 5point, you could by a Cobra race seat for only a few hundred more.. <a href="http://www.wmsracing.com/pgi-CustomListProducts?Cobra%20Seats,2,160,=,cobraseat" target="_blank">http://www.wmsracing.com/pgi-Cus....braseat</a>

as for the bottle fed Buck, I have access to jets between 14 and 75hp.

I haven't seen any body with harnesses yet.

Well I have seen a lot of poeple with Harness PADS! Which are total rice! hahah

I agree that harnesses will hold you in your seat better.  And are much better than Stock seat belts becasue your hands on the steering wheel isn't what's keeping you in place.

But if they are holding you in place properly, head movement is bascially from the neck up.  In the event of a roll over, 3pt belts provide WAY more movement both down and to the sides for you to duck and save your neck.  There is no comparison.

Talonts96
I must give my 2 cents worth.
In an event of a rollover your body gets thrown around so much that even if you wanted to youre not hoing to be able to duck buddy.  The G-forces that are involved in a rollover severe enough to crush the roof are high enough that your body is like a rag doll inside the vehicle.  Saying that you'll be able to duck is like saying you can just hold on the the steering wheel in a frontal (without wearing the belt) and youll be fine.  Not unless you can bench press 2000 lbs you cant (in a 10g frontal).

reno
I agree, however a brusied body is better than a missing head.

REFLUX
sounds like you should only change your seatbelt if you really NEED it

just invest the extra money in better seats if you want to be "more snug"

besides...i wouldn't trust just anyone to install SEATBELTS for me.........too risky

Heh heh heh.  I can't help myself sometimes...

Well, I'm hope one would only be doing ah... "vehicular acts of insanity" on a track, where it belongs, and therefore you should be wearing a helmet.

I remember reading an emial from someone on the SE-R mailing list about having his head pinned between the car and the road in a rollover. Fortunately, he spend a good deal of cash on a good helmet.

Responsibility before idiocy <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

And in most rollover situations, your head would be reasonalby safe.

ps. Incase you're wondering Talon96 specialises in accident re-construction for insurance companies, if he says it's ok, I'll roll with it <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://asianet.ca/images/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
