| Is it legal to shot off a pellet gun within Edmonton city limits? Reason for asking is that we have a pigeon nest in our car-port and I've got to get rid of the pesky "flying rats". |

yes and no....
you should just apply to the city to get permission to get rid of them |

Gulls are migratory birds, and are thusly protected under the federal migratory birds act. Magpies are not migratory, and the city, sadly, traps them when people complaign (noise). I like magpies and crows.
Pigeons are also non-migratory, and crap all over things. The city does not trap pigeons, as they consider poop less intrusive into people's lives than noise. |

Since when is noise more tolerant than disease?

| I don't get why everyone is down on magpies. I also don't get why we don't have on call exterminators specifically for those stupid, noisy, ugly, smelly, dirty, shit creating pigeons. Yeah, they're noisy. That cooing you hear? That's the sound of everything in a 200 meter radius getting covered in pigeon shit. Maybe the city doesn't trap them because of all the "dead from natural causes" pigeons that would have to be released. There's no way a city worker dealing with pigeons could have any patience with the vermin. |

"Anything is legal if you don't get caught."
I didn't say that, nobody heard me say it. :D
More seriously, I mind pigeons less than I mind seagulls, but coming out of the mall to find a load of pigeon poop on my car is something that has NEVER made me a happy man. If it were happening in my own car port at home, I'd be even less happy.
Shooting the pellet gun, probably legal.
Shooting it at something living... Probably not. |

Snow / slush balls didn't work. (have of course run out of material there.)
Pigeons won't allow me within 15ft before they flush off the nest, so a bat won't work.
I spent 15min on the phone with the EPS non-emergency line yesterday, only to be told they didn't know (switchboard operator had asked a cop) and they referred me to the SPCA. Called there, spent 40min on hold when the line was disconnected. :banghead: |

Well that takes the fun out of it. :drama:
So I can put away my crossbow, and other sorts of "weapon" related seagull/magpie hunting gear.
I guess I will have to do this the old fashion way...with a rock! :D

I cant remember what its called, but there is some shit that they will eat, that bloats their stomachs and they die.
You stick it in bread or some food laying in your shed/garage., |

| It's a good plan, until you have to start cleaning up dead pigeon bodies. Of course, that's better than shit. |

| Man. If I want to fire off a pellet gun in my own goddamn garage I'm going to. Fuck the bylaws. |

Thanks.
Does that mean that only an Edmonton Bylaw officer can / will issue the fine, or can an EPS officer too? |

Back when I was 16, my dad and I sniped a bunch of pigeons that were pooping all over his office parking lot with a pellet gun. Nobody cared and tons of people saw.
My guess that since it is technically illegal, (and I'm not saying to do it) there is a slim chance anybody will care unless you point it at them or walk down Whyte ave with it in your hands. |
