| And now I'm back. What a trip. Way too much fun there. We (sumaru's team) did alright. Since we had an accident in the warmup before the race, and the officials didn't like that, they penalized us, and made us start in LAST place in the race, which was position "46". By the end of the race, we finished in 10th place. Not bad hey? It was great to watch Reg Sumaru slice through the competition all the way up to 10th spot. All fo the cars above 10th were crazy 600hp Porsches, Proformance cars (kinda like NASCAR cars) and dudes with way too much money in their cars that we just couldn't compete with (like $200,000 into their race cars). But all in all it was a blast. |

I don't visit very often. And the odd times I do go there, I'm mostly lurking. Its kinda depressing actually, how bad it is there.
Today's youth..
There is so much BS and mis-information floating around on there. Its enough to make you :puke:
I tend to get sucked in to anything Z or Nissan related when I happen to catch it. When I saw that post about 300ZXTTs, I couldn't sit on my hands or bite my tongue any longer!! LOL :D A few guys on there definately deserved a BIG :slap: !! followed by a :stickpoke: and maybe the odd :blast: to some. |

Alright, I'l clarify everything for you guys. Obviously the Indy is the main event. But they have several side classes of cars that race in between for entertainment etc. There were 4 other classes of cars that were racing besides the CART cars. There was Barber Dodge cars, Fran Am cars, CASCAR cars, and the SCCBC (Sports car club of British Columbia). Both the Barber dodge and Fran Am's look identical to the Indy cars but smaller and less power, but the Barber dodges have to run Dodge motors. The CASCARS are just like NASCARS except they are the Candian addition. And the SCCBC has a variety of cars and classes. GT2, GT3, GTS, IP2, IP3, IP4 etc etc. GTS are the most powerful cars with limitless amounts of modifications allowed, and the IP4's are many many restrictions. Your GT2's, GT3's, and GTS cars are your Tubeframe fibreglass high horsepower cars like Porsches, Z's, RX7's, and there were a couple of SpeedVision Tourning cars there.
Reg had a GT2 class 1971 240Z with a 280Z straight 6 in it. But right before the Indy we built a new front end for the car which consisted of a large from splitter and side Couwels (spelling), therefore this placed us in the GTS class because of the aerodynamic changes.
Here's how the weekend went for those of you that care to know:
Friday we practiced in the morning and all went well, handling, braking, and acceleration were going well for us. Second practice that day, handling went shitty, braking was ok, and fuel was cutting out bad, fuel pressure was hitting "0" when powering out of the corners which was a serious concern. We needed to fix this problem FAST. Saturday morning we hit up MOPAC and bought a 1 gallon fuel cell to serve as a surge tank, an electric pump and a tonne of fuel lines and Aeroquipe fittings. At the end of it, we used the electric pump to feed the gravity fed pump which feeds the engine. The surge tank was not needed as our plan didn't work. Fuel problem was then solved. We lowered the car some more and stiffened up the sway bars. Right when we finished all this it was qualifying that night. Handling went to shit again, and the brakes were failing, fuel was great. So we only placed 19th out of 50 cars.
Sunday morning was warmup before the race, and we changed up the suspension again to compensate. Worked better but not great, but we encountered another problem. On the back straight away there is a small curve, just big enought to make you let off the gas. We were powereing through that and were passing a "Pro-formance" car, which look just like NASCAR's, and were passing him on the inside, when dude decides to pull in to the right in our direction. Unfortunately he nailed us and sent him into the wall, and we lucked out with only a mashed up wheel, front panel and front bumper. With that, the officials placed the blame on us and disqualified out qualifying time, so we had to start in last place (46th, cause some cars crashed in qualifying and couldn't race). We started in 46th and powered out way through everyone and finished in 15th spot. We checked out the official sheet and they messed up pretty hardcore on it, they said a few cars beat us when they didn't even finish the race, go figure. So we figure it was approximately 10th place when compensating for that.
First and second place were Proformance cars, third was a tubeframe 300zx with a Z straight 6 in it, quick change rear end, and sequential gear box. Sorry Jason, no VG in these races, not powerful enough ;). 4th was an FD RX7 and 5th was a Porsche 911 Turbo that was just insane.
I would also like to mention the Fiero with the Winston Cup moto in it, and the FC RX7 with the Triple rotor motor in it. They placed 2 and 3rd in qualifying, but took each other out in the first lap. Both with 600hp ;) Hope this gives you guys a little idea of what Indy is about. Too much fun. If you have any more questions for me, I"ll answer what I can. I'll try to fire up some pics for you guys too.
PEACE |

Sounds like you had an awesome time on the weekend.
Was that tubeframe 300zx one of the ones from Edmonton? (belonging to Bruce or Raplh by chance?) |
|
|
| SRBURG13 |
| There are 2 tube frame 300's there. The yellow one is Kevins (Bruce built it for him) and the silver one is Ralphs. Ralph totalled his in the race. All four corners are toast. Kevin (Bruces car) is the one that finished 3rd. Must be nice to have all that cash. BTW, Kevin owns Squires and a few other bars. :D |

Hey Aaron, just out of curiousity. I happened to speak to Reg this morning on the phone, and during the conversation I casually brought up his racing in Vancouver, but didn't say much except how'd it go? Anyway, he said he "finished 2nd in his division".
:wtf:
That doesn't jive with the detailed description you gave us. Anyway, I just said something like "cool, right on" or something but didn't press him on the details or let on at all that I'd heard a different story. I didn't want to accuse anyone of anything not having been there myself or not necessarily having all the facts.
Was he talking about a different race or is he exagerating on his results, or...
 :dunno: |
|
|
| SRBURG13 |
| Hmmmmm, thats weird. Reg does like to exagerate some things. But I have no idea why he said second in the division. The only reason I can think of is that when we raced, we were placed back into GT2 class because we used the original bumper we had (not the modified one which put us in GTS) and for the GT2 cars, I think that would have placed us in the 2nd place area, because all the other cars in front of us were all GTS. Thats the only reasoning I can think of. Weird. |

Hello all,
A bit of clarification, there were only 4 classes: P1, P2, P3, P4.
P1 were all the fastest cars: Tube framed all-out race cars. This included the triple rotor RX7 IMSA car(qualified 2nd overall), Nascar powered Fiero from Edmonton (qualified 1st overall), the pair of 300ZXs from Edmonton (qual. 5th & 7th), a street legal 3rd gen RX7 with a single turbo from Vancouver Island (qual. 6th), all the Proformance cars (qualified various places, like 3rd,4th, they are a tube frame Monte Carlo, like Nascar, with Chevy crate motors), Porsche 911 Turbos, I'm sure you get the idea. This was the class the Zs were in too, as well as BMWs, and a CRX!?! Basically GT1&2 or so...???
P2 was the next class down, and probably the smallest. In this class were the Integras, Mustangs, a Volvo, a Camaro. This class was more for Touring cars, and GT3 cars.
P3 was more like Improved Production and GT4, including things like stock Mustangs and raced prepped Hondas.
P4 was the slowest group, mainly consisting of Hondas...stock Hondas....boo...
If you are wondering, yes I was there, yes I worked for a team. I helped Wouter Bouman and his 3rd gen RX7. He finished 5th overall, after starting 6th. The battles between him and the 300ZXs were amazing! Until Ralph stuffed it into the tires trying to pass a slower car.
More info...
I have no idea why Reg would have said he finished 2nd, he finished 15th overall, and 15th in class. Maybe he was breaking it down into the other classes, like GTS, etc... He still did an amazing job though after starting last...I think it was a bad call, but you can't argue with the stewards.
Other Nissan highlights (or lows):
300ZX's finished 3rd and 8th overall, and in P1
Rotory powered 510 finished 16th in P1 (17th Overall)
one 280Z didn't finish, another crashed in qualifying and DNS.
68 Roadster had engine troubles and didn't run all weekend.
What a great weekend!! |
