GOT BOOST'S head swap project - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
So after running another compression test I decided to not pull the entire engine and do the rings. The compression was much closer to factory specs and the variation was with in limits.

Instead, I decided to just pull the head, swap over my existing componets and do the valve stem seals.

All I am waiting for is:

1) The new valvestem seals, should be here this week.
2) Need to order the TMS 1.4MM metal head gasket.
3) Need new lower rad hose. Glad I caught the leak BEFORE I turned it over for the first time. :D

Thanks to Marcenator for your help.

Here are some pics.

Mike

The coolant in cylinder # 1 was an oversight on my part. :D

The old head on the Right, the new one on the Left.

Old head stripped down, just waiting for the valvestem seals.

Intake ready for the transplant.

It actually looks like I know what I am doing here. :D

Why just not pull the block and rebuild it? You are just a few minutes away anyhow.

7m's are always fun to work on hahahaha

if your getting a metal headgasket your going to have to pull the whole engine out anyway.

naa, thats not the way mike works.

he'll pull the engine and do only the rings next winter. then the winter after that he'll do the bearings. etc. doing it all at once costs slightly more now and will take longer, he wants to drive his car and try for a new blown turbo record this summer, lol.

I already have the HKS 1.2mm bead gasket installed.

I am changing it to the TMS 1.4mm head gasket.

I did not pull the block to lap it the first time. It did not blow in this case. I have no plans to lap it this time either.

Mike,

Sounds cool, you might have an issue getting the timing right with that head gasket. So be careful and enjoy, also I hope your timing belt is in good shape.

Cheers,

Faster than I like to admit, but when I am in there I like to just mess around and have a good time, so it can take longer than expected or that it should. :D Sunday was a GIT-R-DONE day. If I receive my parts this week, she will go back together on Sunday, if not, I will be staring at my block thinking of the good’ole days.

Sometimes I forget to unhook stuff, othertimes unhook stuff that was not necessary.

Sometimes I need help with the smaller clips wedged in tight places as I have King Kong hands.

I think The STIG might make a guest appearance in my garage. I will try to get him for a photo shoot.

Damn, nice work.
Whenever I see you post or show pics of your car, I can't help but think back to my teenage days. We use to go to dealerships and pretend to be interested in cars so we could test drive and bag/break them. It was immature and stupid but yeah, we were young and it was fun.
I remember this red MKIII Supra from Mayfield Toyota, we did crazy burnouts and donuts in. We were redlining it in every gear and driving the piss out of it. When we finally brought it back to the dealership, it was making funny noises so we just shut it off quickly so the salesman wouldn't hear and took off. Apparently, the techs still remember that day cause it got pretty fucked up.
Anyways, it's nice to see that it was purchased by someone who will take care of it now. Looking back, I felt pretty bad for the car, especially after I got my first turbo car and learned about turbo timing.

I can answer that for Got Boost. NO it was a pretty hurt unit when he picked it up. I remeber because the car was barley faster than my 3.9 v6 Dakota.

Thanks to Mike's stuborn determination he know has got himself a nice ride, for a Supra. Also a lot can happen to a car when cubic dollars are spent. Mike

Cheers,

I washed the head on sat night.

Just waiting for the valve stem seals to come in and the and head gasket to be shipped with the other goodies.

I should be receiving the valve stem seals today or tomorrow. They were shipped on the 10th.

I still need to clean the carbon off the valves before I put them back in. :D

Actually the car was not bad.

I purchased it the beginning of Feb 2002. The body had some spots of rust here and there but that worked towards my advantage when it came to negotiating.

The engine was fine. The car was barely faster as we were in the snow, with bald rear tires, and driver error accounted for a lot.

Once I became more fluent with my shifting the car was faster.

After a few months of driving it, I then sent it to a body shop for 18 months to get the rust cut out, new metal welded in, and the car repainted. It was more of a project car that was done on the side, so I did not care when the car would be ready or out of the shop.

Just to update...

Recieved the new valve stem seals today. Also picked up the new lower rad hose and intake manifold gasket. :D

Maybe tomorrow if I am feeling motivated I will:

1) Install the valve stem seals.
2) Clean the carbon off the valves
3) Install the valves, valve springs, etc
4) Install the cams, etc
5) install the intake and exhaust manifolds to the head.

Then... I wait for my head gasket.

GOT BOOST
Just to update.

Today I:

1) I cleaned the valves (Thanks Marcenator for the usage of your bench grinder)
2) Installed the Intake valves. This weekend I plan for the exhaust and cams. :D

Still waiting for brake upgrade, and headgasket. Some items are on back order.

Here are some new pics.
