Insurance Question - Click HERE for Original Thread

This has probably been covered before but I searched and came up with nothing..
Say I don't have insurance under my name on any car. I drove my friend's car which is insured under his name.
If I were to get into an accident and I was at fault. Who would have to pay the damages?
Would his insurance be responsible or would I have to pay out of my pocket? :dunno:
You can tell Im a new driver..

Fault depends on the nautre of the accident. There are 1,075,215 ways to crash a vehicle. I have only completed a fraction of those ways. :D

When operating your friends vehcile he should have it insured. There is also a section for uninsured motorists.

According to my insurance co... I can let a friend of mine drive my rides and still be covered as long as it is occasional or the odd use. Now, if they are to be a regular driver, I would need to add them onthe policy and my rates would be reflected accordingly.

So lets say if I lend my Supra to BLOCKER and he decides to go stunting and crash into a tree.

Well then since I have collision, everything would be covered uncluding any damages as a result to him from the collision, my car, property damage, etc.

If I did not have collision, then my insurance co would pay out for the tree, everything else around it, except to replace/fix my car.

Hope this helps,

Mike

If your friend had collision, his insurance would pay. His rates would also go up.

If he just has PDPL you/your friend would have to pay out of pocket. Chances are that since you are a new driver (I'm assuming young) he probably only has PDPL. Comprehensive coverage isn't really worth it when you are young because 95% of the time your vehicle isn't worth paying 4k/yr in insurance, or if you do have a nice car it is probably 6k/yr+... better off just buying a cheaper car. Rates would stay the same unless you crashed into someone else, then they would go up.

If you crash someone else's car insurance gets pretty angry. I know a kid who crashed his dads car (totaled a 6spd g35), his dad prior had no accidents and had been driving for quite a few years so they didn't increase his rates. They did however make him sign a clause not to allow his son to ever drive his vehicles again. I'm not 100% but I believe that if his son crashes another one of his vehicles he isn't covered for damages, only PDPL.

Excuse my ignorance but what is PDPL?

It is PLPD. Personal Liability, Property Damage. :D

Mike

Personal Damages and Personal Liability.
It basically means that they will fix whatever you break, with the exception being your vehicle. It is the most basic coverage you can get to be road legal.

It's hard to go stunting in a car that can't even spin its tires

Mike,

That's correct...with a condition. The kicker is that you can only let people drive your car who are insured drivers on another vehicle....if you want to be completely covered in the event of a collision in the eyes of your insurance...lest you receive an increase in your rates due to the driving of somebody other than yourself.

And never lend your car to somebody who's had their license suspended...for impaired or otherwise. Basically, never give your insurance company an "out" in any way.

Hmmm... Interesting.

I thought that the "uninsured motorist" premium I pay would cover that. I was under the impression that my vehicle is insured, no matter who drives it. I will need to make a call to my insurance company to find out for sure.

Thanks for the info.

AudiInProgress,

Yes, U R the gramar and speling police. ;)

My understanding of the "uninsured motorist" section is say Joe Ricer parks his car for the winter, takes insurance off it, then one nice Saturday decided to chance it and takes it for a spin

Or Joe Bum picks up a cheap beater drives around on old plates, no insurance....

Either case they hit your insured car, their fault, then the Uninsured motorist section pays to fix your car so it doesn't affect your PLDL or Comp, thent he insurance co goes after said driver to pay them back for the money they paid out.

Or atleast that's what a couple brokers have told me in the past..

I know a lady who is going through this scenario, her kid 17, only has a learners or gdl(can't drive by himself) a friend told him to drive his truck, not sure if the friend was in the truck, any how the kid ended up smoking a building.. not quite sure how.. but now the mother is worried somebody is gonna come after her for the $60,000 whatever damage bill... still have to see how that'll turn out.

Dan_Gyoba
Yep. "Uninsured motorist" means that it covers in the event that the driver at fault (not you) doesn't have insurance on their car. Otherwise, you'd have to get the money from them personally. (This way, the insurance company does it.)

If your friend is not insured under anly policy and they do something that's their fault to someone else, it's all bad.

I've seen in the past where the owner's insurance would handle it, then go after the driver for damages, but that was back when there was still an "unsatisfied claims" section in Alberta, so things have changed since then.
