Exhaust Clearence WITH PICS!!! - Click HERE for Original Thread

tercel drifter
Well here is my dilemma, I installed a 3' brm exhaust and the clearance is really horrible I've had it on for two days now and been avoiding knows spots where it scrapes.

Now i dont know if there is any solution to fix this problem, could i possibly put in a flex pipe before the down pipe and weld some sort of brace to hold it up, is this possible? Please help me if you've had this problem or know a way to raise my exhaust as there is still at least around 1.5 to 2' room to raise it.

BTW I have 16' wheels and megan coilovers and would like to drop it some more as there is still a 1' gap from the fender to the wheel.

That is crazy low man! What do you just drive that thing on your driveway or do you dare leave the house.

That was the day i installed the exhaust, now i know not to park there anymore, well i just have to go on an angle lol.

Well your first mistake was buying a POS BRM exhaust.

Unless you can fit and weld yourself, just take it to a muffler shop and get them to chop it so it fits tighter.

I was reading good things about it, now i realize i should of payed the extra cash... well we learn from our mistakes....

If you say there is a couple inches to play with, a muffler shop could easily raise it up a bit. Thats your easiest solution.

make sure all the pieces are on the right way. i had a customer who bolted a center section on the wrong way and had similar issues. i'd check the short connector piece in the middle. may be backwards.

the car isnt that low, the exhaust just seems to be hanging really low. How much clearance does it actually have? its hard to tell with a picture.

just wondering :)

get the exhaust shop to add some hangers

i saw you driving a couple days ago. Anyway, not sure if you can do this with yours but it works with preludes.

What you do is you take a car jack and jack the exhaust as far as you can against the chasis. Once it is as high as possible you take some clamps (something like a t-bolt clamp works best) and you clamp arount the rubber gromets connecting the hangers and the chasis. If you look at those gromets they have about an inch of play in them. By clamping them it sucks the exhaust up that extra inch and locks it there. You remove the jack and your exhaust should stay higher than before

You should not try to attach the exhaust anywhere else other than at the transmission mount. The transmission mount enables the downpipe to move with the engine as it torques. If you connect this to a part of the frame, the DP will not move with the torquing engine and you will just end up replacing your turbo seals which is a lot of tedious wrenching (I guess in your case, the exhaust manifold).

was that directed to me?

Holy crap, that must be pretty intense to drive with and not scrape on our lovely edmonton roads.

x2 on taking to a muffler shop. Personally i've had good experiences with Atlas muffler on 51st ave and 99 st ish.
