just wanted to know how much over the speed limit on the highway u are allowed to go? lets say highway 2(is that calgary trail?) speed limit after edmonton and leduc is 110km/h right? lets say im going around 130. wud i get pulled over or wud a cop pull up beside me and make jesters to slow down?

Technically by law you're allowed to do 110km/h, what ever the max speed limit is... most times they give a 10km/h leway for mechanic imperfections/tire variances, etc....

PnOyGhost
oh ok so sometimes 120km/h in a 110 km/h is ok?

Officially no.. what if your tires are slightly larger than stock and your speedo is a touch out.. you could be doing 130km/h and not even know it.

Unofficially, I was driving Hiway 2, caught up to an RCMP, everybody creaped up to him doing about 115km/h, then passed doing 115km/h then sped up to 120-130km/h and the RCMP officer did nothing....

So some Officers will allow a larger leway, but as I said per law, the limit is the limit, but the drivers book implies on a smaller hiway like 2A you can do potentially do 5km/h over the limit to pass somebody.

ok thank u.

I have never seen anyone ticketed for 3-5km/h over.

In fact, the only times I have ever been ticketed personally, is when doing 13km/h or more over the limit.

10km/h over the limit is "generally" what most people do I would think?

My dad got a ticket once for 1km/h over.. he went to court the Judge looked at the cop, said smarten up and dismissed it.

I've heard of people getting tickets in the 8-9km/h over range before.

But I answered be law.. sure Officers may let you get away with 10km/h over... but the law is... read above :P

Speed limit is 110 km/h you can legally only go 110 km/h, keep your car with in 10% of the speed limit, ex// Speed limit 50, don't go faster then 55 and so on. you should be safe..but no promises

Where does this come from? I could not imagine the driving book implying one could break the law. Not saying it is not true, just curious why you think it implies this?

this is a little different, but my brother just got a ticket for going 5 over the limit(photo). i think is is pure BS. unless your on cruise, your speed will fluctuate because your foot is not perfectly still and your not always looking at the speedo.

honestly, doesnt that say money grab all over it?

Well... when I got my license the book said the proper way to pass on the highway is the person doingthe passing should accelerate 5km/h and the guy getting passed should slow down by 5km/h.... however if you're both doing 100.. really the only reason to pass is if you get tired of eating rocks.

Naw money grab is I was doing 5km/h under the limit, passed the van and got a ticket for doing 15km/h over.

I've found that most times you'll "get away with" a few km/h over. I've heard that photo radar on the Whitemud is triggered at 91 (80 zone) though I'm not eager to test that theory. I've got better uses for my money, thanks.

However, construction zones, school zones, and residential areas in general are far more likely to have a zero tolerance policy in effect. As a result, I'd rather stay 5-10 km/h under that posted limit. Besides, those zones have the low limits for a reason. I'd hate to injure someone because I was trying to save a bit of time.

As for "go a bit over to pass" -- I remember from driver's ed (Back in 1986) my instructor told me that it is not legal to exceed the speed limit, but if it's a choice between the letter of the law, and being safe, go a bit faster when you're passing a semi on a 2 lane road, so that you can spend less time in the oncoming lane.

As far I know, that is not why you get an allowance of 10km/hr. Roads are designed by engineers for certain safe operating speed based on simple physics. The posted speed limit never exceeds the design speed, and is always posted at or below it. And, 120km/hr happens to be the design speed of a freeway in Alberta. It gets posted as 110.

That might be how they figure out what the speed limit should be but probably not why you get a leeway.
