| So i'm driving home from work tonight at about 10:45 and there is a cop car beside me at the lights and I'm waiting to turn left and he is not. Next thing I know I take the turn and so does he so I'm like okay whatever he must have messed up and next thing I know he turns on his lights and I'm like shit son what happened I signaled, I'm not even close to speeding and I'm buckled. So he comes up to my car and wants all this info and I cant give him my insurance cuz my agent sent it to me in the mail and still hasnt come, its only been a couple of days since I called her and without insurance you cant register a vehicle but she told me I'd be okay for 2 weeks!! Oh and the cop was mad cuz he told me I should have had it faxed and I told him yeah well I dont have a fax so yeah. I ended up getting ticketed for failure to produce insurance and operating an unregistered vehicle. they go hand in hand so anyways I'm going to call my insurance company and ask her how in the hell I got all these fines if what she told me is true and other then that I have to go to court cuz without insurance I cant get registration so yeah. and anytime I tried to ask the cop something he just said you know what if you want I can tow your car and take your license. like what a big fucking help he was eh. I'm calling my insurance and the north div police station tmr just to tell them how much of a prick this guy was! |

How the hell is he being a prick? Are you 16 or something? You HAVE to have proof of insurance in the vehicle. How hard is that to understand? You should have had your insurance faxed to you or waited 2 weeks to get it in the mail.
And he did you a favor by not towing your car. |

It is illegal to have a vehicle on a public roadway (even parked) without insurance and registration. While there is some leeway on the license plate (if you've taken the car to which the plate you're now using out of service), but there is ZERO leeway on insurance.
So how about editing your post to change the title to "Effin stupid noobie driver"? |

Yeah.. Sorry to break it to ya guy, But those are the things you NEED to have on you when driving your car... Simple as that..
You may be able to go to court and get one of the tickets thrown out, because you DID have the papers.. but not on you.. But the other one.. No registration.. That's a little tougher, because you straight up, Didn't have it...
Just learn from your mistakes.. I've done the same... |

Wrong.
You can drive a vehicle for 2 weeks without registration. So long as you carry the bill of sale in its place. And you cannot get registration without proof of insurance...
Personally, in the past, I've driven for 2 weeks without an insurance pink card or registration papers.
I've never been pulled over, lucky for me, but I felt confident enough that I legally did have insurance on the vehicle; and was well within the 2 week grace period to wait for my actual papers in the mail.
I do have access to a fax machine however, so when I got my most recent car, I just had them fax me a liability slip and then I stuffed that in the glove box...
Most cops will give you the opportunity to go home and get your pink card and then bring it in to the police station and prove to them you have insurance... This guy obviously didn't feel like it.
But if you're within your 2 weeks, I would definately fight the "no registration" ticket. |

| yeah see thats what I dont like is that the cop has the option to let you come inwith it the day after or not. It should just flat out be a law. I was definatly misinformed because my insurace agent told me to just wait to get my shit in the mail before I do go to register it so yeah. |

| No... It shouldn't be law. The law is to have proof of insurance with you. Now you're just being a dick. It was the officers choice to ticket you... If you don't agree with it - fight them. But don't come into this section and bitch and moan. |

As I wrote, you can only do so if you're using a plate off a car that's no longer being driven (one plate doesn't cover two cars).
Pretty easy for an insurance company to fax the registries office with the temp pink card.
There is no excuse... |
