Cops and bikes - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have read (granted on forums... not the most reliable sources) that in Florida if a motorbike decides to take off that the cops are not legally alowed to make chase, as there is no safe way for them to do so. I am curious if such legislation exists in Alberta as well.
The reason I ask is that last year I was pulled over on the begining of 16A westbound for improper licence plate angle (remedied roadside with no ticket). While swiching lanes to pull over (I went from far left 4 lanes over to far right), I notice that the cop turned his lights off and fell behind before changing lanes with me.
When we were stopped and talking he said that the way in which I changed lanes led him to believe that I was going to take off (the third lane was open and there were no cars infront of me... I guess I changed a little quick), and he was turning his lights off to stop pursuit.
I asked him why he wouldnt follow and he said that there was no safe way for him to do so and he would radio ahead to be on the lookout for my bike make/color, but other than that he would have moved on. I never thought to ask him if this was at his discression or if it was policy (as I had not heard of Floridas policy at this point).
So any official answer on this one?

On a related note is the police chopper used for pursuits? I was expecting some great chase shots on the six o'clock news when it was introduced, but have yet to see any :(

BLOCKER
There is no legislation in alberta prohibiting police from pursuing a motorcycle.

There have been numerous occasions that police have been involved in pursuits with motorcycles. The motorcycles however, are quick, and Air one is usually utilized.

We can not (according to policy) ram or use a spike belt on a motorcycle.

Thanks for the fast reply, and comforting to know that they wont ram bikers lol... although I've seen a few videos on spike's disorderly conduct where that rule was broken! But then again thats in the states and they had texas accents... so he's probably lucky they didnt just shoot him!
Guess I'll have to keep watching the news and waiting for some of that footage then!

Boo-erns to that. A criminal is a criminal, I say hit him and I'll give you the thumbs up as I drive by his road rashed body.

I remember this guy from high school who fled from the cops on a crotch rocket several years back. He ended up crashing his bike and decapitating himself.

Lesson: Don't run from police ;)
