Subaru and Toyota have confirmed that they're working together on a joint RWD sports car platform.
I have four criteria that I hope they stick to.
1. Four seats
2. Manual shifter at least an option
3. Sub-3,000lbs.
4. Over 200hp with bigger optional engines
Seeing as it will be a boxer, there is plenty of opportunity for upgrades/swaps straight out of the Subaru parts bin. A 300hp/300lb.-ft. EJ25 in a small, light RWD sports car? Can you say epic amount of fun?
Word in the past was that the base engine will be an NA 1.5L. |

| Yes... But will I fit? |

| Quite likely. Toyota isn't known for making cramped cars lately. |

First of all I had no idea it's going to be a joint project with Subaru and second, here's to hoping it's in the S2000's weight range...If all goes well then all I can say is...FINALLY!. |

| 300hp, under 3000lbs, under $30,000? :fingersx: |

Only thing I'm worried about is the transmission. Its been a trend to use ONLY auto-fucking-matics in every car nowadays. Even the 500 HP ones...

You know I was thinking about that junk today. I believe it is the future though. Really the only way to go beyond 6 manual gears is with an automated manual. Sad but true.
<----- will be one of the old timers in 20 years bitching about the death of the traditional manual trans. |

Ditto, except I won't be that old .
I'm excited to see how this car turns out :fingersx:
EDIT: They need to make it with pop up lights, no new cars have em haha :D |

This is a great idea. Toyota needs something like this as all their cars are boring and 99.9% are four door.
Great thing is we are getting two cars out of the deal, one toyota the other subaru.
Count me in for being one of the older fart complaining about the death of the real manual trans 20 years from now. (But by then we will have electric cars or hydrogen cars. But both could have a manual trans I guess)
Not sure the cars will have pop up headlights. They died a long time ago. Plus I have never liked them. |

Hooray for low centre of gravity.:D
Shit, forgot the price criteria. Yes, I would like to see it come in under $30k for a solid base model.
I said it before, but if they make this a pretty solid car I would seriously consider buying brand new. |

| It'll be nice to see a RWD sports car come from toyota that's pantloads of fun and affordable. They've been without something like that for quite some time. |

| Is it even possible to make a car in the 2200lb range like they used to? Or is there so much safety equipment nowadays? 3000lbs still seems heavy. |
|

| Not really much chance of something that light existing. If Toyota is going to build a RWD chassis again though you can be damn sure they'll be campaigning it on race tracks around the world, so they'll build a really solid chassis underneath that you can strip the hell out of to drop weight. |

| 3800lbs seems about "normal" to me... So 3000lbs in my mind would be "light" |

not much chance of getting a car in hte 2200 pound range. people like their 4000 pound cars with a thousand options and a 300hp engine because that is 'fast'.
you can get lotus elise which is under 2000 pounds, but is barebones by todays standards.
15 years ago you could get urself into a 4 seater toyota that weighed 1800 pounds, that had ac, power everything, and a sunroof. turbo engine too.
15 years ago a sti and evo weighed about 2500 pounds, today they weigh 3600 and 3700 respectively.
cars today are unnecessarily heavy. put it this way, you know how those muscle cars from the 70s were big heavy boats? ya well actually they aren't, they're lighter then most mid/fullsize/sports cars today. a 69 charger with a big block is lighter then the new evo which only has a 4 cylinder. figure that one out. |

They must be making these new cars for americans. 15 years ago americans weighed less too. |

Better not be that heavy. This will be a compact car, think Scion TC size, not a midsize car. |

Agreed  I'd love to see this actually make it to production |

Nah...I'm seriously thinking it'll be in the sub-3000lb category. It's a compact car, think Scion tC, Civic and Corolla weight. It won't weigh nearly as much as the new STi or Evo, no AWD + electronically adjustable center diffs, no AYC etc...
Sure cars aren't as light as they used to be, but that all comes into play with the majority of present-day demand that goes into safety, sound deadening/insulation, higher quality materials (well...high quality materials aren't necessarily always the case...) etc.
A modern car doesn't have to weigh 3000+ lbs...think of most of the compacts(again Civic, Corolla) out there and then a few of the sports cars(S2000 weighs around 2700 or so lbs). Due to the Toyota status of 'compact' of this new 86 (lol already calling it that), there's no real point in it weighing nearly that much.
Most it'll weigh is 31-3200lbs as is the weight of the MK5 Golf and GTi. And they're considered heavy for their class.
Man, despite the sparse info, I'm already excited for this. |
