How reliable are rx7's? - Click HERE for Original Thread

stealth
Im just wondering how reliable they are. I notice alot of RX7 with rebuilds or new engines, why is this?

now
As with any high performance engine they require
rebuilds at regular intervals say about 120,000km to 200,000km.
any engine that is getting 150hp to 255hp (2nd gen to 3rd gen)
out of 1.3L displacement is going to need maintenance.
that's about 3.2 hp per cubic inch of displacement for the 3rd gen.
Guys that get that kind of power out of a V8, say a 350 x 3.2 = 1120hp,
almost have to rebuild after each 1/4 mile run!
I would say that a rotary is VERY durable in comparison.

people who say rotaries aren't reliable are caught on the bandwagon

if you pick up a rotary that has been maintained PROPERLY and you continue to maintain it properly, it will last you a LONG time

N/A can last well over 200,000km
Turbo's are different because they require more maintenance and original/previous owners usually don't maintain them well (time down, start up, oil changes)

I bought mine, guy wouldn't even let me take it for a test drive.. I bought it, I drove it.. didn't have a single major problem.. everything that happened to it was my fault.. The car ran excellent and i loved it.. cried when the guy drove it away when i sold it after it got banged up during winter.. Only real problem i had was the starter went after i cranked the shit out of it during winter.. hehe, once again.. my fault.

rotaries are a great idea and an excellent invention... only thing is that they didnt take the time or the money to improve it, or perfect it....

I would rather rebuild 1000 imperfect rotaries than one
piston engine again!!!!!!
pistons are a pain in the a$$ to rebuild!

some would say that the Renesis engine is a perfected rotary

~280hp from a 1.3L engine....sounds pretty good to me ;)

I bought my car 3 years ago with 204,000 km on it. The thing ran strong until 250,000 kms when the motor blew. The only thing wrong with the car now is the big freakin dent in the side. People who don't like rotaries either know nothing about them or are to close-minded to want to know.

Well I thought I might add to this thread... Since that I have been thru allot with my 94 RX7.

I guess that's depends on what you want out of a car...?

A couple years back I blew my Engine/ Rear Diff/ 1 turbo/ all in 1 yr. This was brought on by me Drag Racing. If you want to play...you'll have to pay. I have been drag racing my car ever since 95 when I got it. I started with the basic mods...intake/exhaust/Intercooler/Ecu/ and a few extras. Racing at the track with Drag radials puts allot of stress on the drivetrain. So I have a full racing diff in there now.

I guess you'll have to ask yourself...What you want out of a car?
If you want it just quick on the street with some basic mods... then yes you'll have a reliable car. But if you want to put it to it's full potential without any trouble from cops then take it to the track... but just build it to be bulletproof.

That's with any car... All that drag racing since 95 caught up with me but I still plan to still drag race again this summer... the cops on the street make it to hard for everone to enjoy their rides on the street.

hope this helps,
jack
