Edmonton BMW owners (and Euros) meet - Click HERE for Original Thread

97'scort
Hey to everybody on 780Tuners! Some of you might recognize me from Beyond.ca or bimmerforums.com (I've spotted a few familiar nicks). Anyways, I'm here to spread the word about the BMW (and Euro) meet on May 10th. Details:

For those of you with facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=13405541711

For those of you under a rock:

Event Info Name: Edmonton BMW Spring Meet and BBQ!
Tagline: Pull the cars out of the garage and meet for some meat.
Host: BMW owners of Edmonton
Type: Party - Club Party
Date: Saturday, May 10, 2008
Time: 2:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: William Hawrelak Park, Picnic Site 1
Street: 9930 Groat Rd.
City/Town: Edmonton, AB

Description
Time to get everybody together for a spring meet and greet. I think we've worked out a good time, as we'll miss both the long weekend and Mother's day, so hopefully everybody can make it!

We've booked a spot at Hawrelak Park for the 10th of May, and parking will be at the BBQ site. I am looking for somebody who would volunteer to bring a propane grill (or two) as the wood stoves there take forever to cook on.

**Cost is $5/car (max two people) or $10 for a family. Cash will go towards paying for the picnic site (you'd think taxes cover this shit but nooooo), and condiments, paper plates, and napkins. Any extra cash will be donated to the Edmonton Youth Shelter.

Please bring your own burgers, hot dogs, or other tube steak for the grill, as well as drinks. Please, no alcohol!

Park map: http://www.edmonton.ca/portal/serve...icSiteImage.htm

If any of you have questions, feel free to post 'em up here, or post on the Facebook page. Thanks everybody!

Is this group completely independant of the NABMW Club?

Yup. We're free, no membership fees. But we also don't have all the driving events that they do. We're working on a card and some discounts, but we still don't want to charge a yearly fee, just a one-time fee to cover the cost of the card + donation to a charity.

Why don't you guys just JOIN the NABMW Club and save yourselves the trouble of reinventing the wheel? They are already established, are a legal entity (tax and liability wise), and have all the contacts, events and benefits (discounts) around town.
:dunno:

And for the Calgary based folks there's the SABMW Club.

97'scort
^ The exact reason is that they charge a yearly membership fee, which is something we don't want to pay. All we do is get together and have a BBQ and a cruise a few times a year, is that such a big deal?

Besides, the NA club seems to be full of people who look down on people, even other BMW owners, for some reason. The attitude has turned a lot of us off.

The facebook group has 130 + members, and our cruise last fall had about 60 cars show up for the meet. We're not re-inventing the wheel, we just want the fun of a meet without the bureaucracy.

Graphicdude
Good on ya, GL with the cruise!

Well, I'm sure there will be more meets throughout the summer. However, this is one of my last meets as I leave for Victoria in June for three-ish years of school. Good chance to say 'bye to everybody.

So be sure to come out to our other meets, but the date for this one isn't changing!

Is this the same group that put on that big meet last fall on the west end?

Kyle,

Actually, that meet had nothing to do with the BMW facebook group other than the fact that they were invited.

I started the meet on the euro forums here , having the first one in 2006, then began the second one on the forums here and posted to 924.org, audifan, bimmerforums, bimmerfest, roadfly, project technique and others. Simon (whiteE46) put it up on facebook. I have also planned both runs (and mapped them)

before you claim ownership of an event, realize all the effort that goes into it.

The Event is meant to be a gathering of all Euro Cars and does not belong to any club, allowing everyone to attend... so please do not claim ownership of it.

best of luck with the run.....

Yup, that's right. Not trying to claim any ownership, poor choice of words perhaps? A good chunk of the BMWs that showed up were part of our group, so we like to feel involved :)

We're open to anybody who wants to come and loves cars, so Euros, Domestics, Imports, anybody is welcome. The donations all go to a good cause.

Hope to see some of you there!

i might be able to make it.... will there be a drive after?

Nothing planned at the moment. But we're in the river valley, I'm sure we could all leave up Groat Road or River Valley Road for some pictures.

UPDATE:

As of right now, I have approximately 30 confirmed vehicles coming to the meet. At $5/ea, this is $150 to work with. Unfortunately, this isn't going to work.

I've already had to spend $114.00 on renting the site. BBQ rental (not including propane, but I happen to have a cylinder) is $80. It'll probably be another $25-30 for plates, napkins, ketchup, mustard, relish, etc. This puts spending somewhere in the neighbourhood of $230, which simply cannot be provided with the confirmed numbers.

I say 'confirmed' because despite my best efforts, there continues to be a large number of people who may or may not come. Nothing more I can do about that.

So here are our options:

1) Somebody generously donates a BBQ for use. I have propane, and I will pick up and return the BBQ on Saturday. This knocks $80+tax off the rentals and lets us keep the $5/car.

2) Price goes up to $10/car for everybody. That'll give us about $300 to work with and we can make a nice donation to the Emergency Shelter.

I don't really see any other alternatives, but if anybody has one I'm open to hearing it. We can't change the hours for the site, so that $114 is already gone. I have receipts if anyone is curious.

So PLEASE, if anyone can donate a BBQ, that's the easiest option. If not, I'm afraid the price will have to go up, as I really don't feel like taking the hit for this. PM me or call me on my cell @ 977-8517. Thanks everybody!

**And FYI, word on the TV, internet, and environment Canada are all saying 15-17 degrees, mostly sunny. No mention of snow! :dunno: ***

97'scort
And as for a cruise, if anybody would like to come up with a route I'd love to hear it! I'm pushing 60 hour weeks right now and it's hard to find time to piss, let alone plan this thing :)

euro_ftw
i am in.

97'scort
Big thanks to everybody who came out! I had a great time. Weather cooperated and I think everybody else had a good time too.

A couple of notes: If you showed up, but didn't pay, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know! No hard feelings at all, I'm sure some people just forgot. With the food/condiments/plates etc, plus picnic site, it was just shy of $150, but I only have $115 from people who paid. I don't mind absorbing that cost, but just let me know.

We've made the decision to move to another site next time that doesn't make us pay for a booking :) So next time, we'll have a donation for the shelter!

Top_Dogxxx
