Getting back into shape - Click HERE for Original Thread

Drave
I've somehow managed to gather a small beer gut over the school year. Now that school is almost done, what would be the best way to go about getting rid of this thing? Eating healthy and maybe running for half an hour three times a week?
Any thoughts would be helpful, thanks.

Twigs_Dee
Put down the beer and pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! heh why just run for half an hour 3 times a week? why not 5 times for an hour? with 5 sets of 20 of sit ups after each time?

Drave
Hahah yeah I'm starting to eat healthier now. But the reason I don't dedicate a whole lot of time to just working out is because I don't have any time. I figure like a half hour run before work 3 times a week would do the trick...wouldn't it?

Does just drinking Diet Pop over Regular Pop make you a healthy person? no, you need to do more. sure it may help a lil. but a lil, is just a lil.

:dunno:

Maybe I'll start out with 3 times a week, and increase it to 5 gradually?
Also, should there be a set time to do this at? Like every day in the mornings, or everyday after work? Or does it matter? I could see it help setting in a pattern, but that's about it...

Id say, set a time. Get a routine, so you just automatically do it and not think about doing it. Than after awhile on a crappy day, you look and think about not doing it... guilt will kick in and you wont feel right and such til you actually do it.... routine thing.

While we are on the subject, anyone a dietitian or hypnotherapist? I suck at the eating healthy/proper diet business and I need some serious help. Constant cravings for bad carbs :D

If you managed to develop a beer gut while in school (???), then you'll really be screwed once you're graduated and out in the work force.

I was the fittest ever in my entire life during my years in university. But once I started my career, which is mostly a desk-bound job, I'm in pale form now compared to back in school. (but some of that is getting older, metabolism slowing down, yadda yadda... )

On a more serious note.. drinking lot's of water.. eating healthy foods and running until you puke, as often as possible is a easy way to lose weight.

Jord@n
To lose weight do cardio. Run/bike/swim/etc. The more hardcore you are, harder you work and better you eat, the faster the pounds will melt off.

Come join me at Servus, Im doing strict cardio right now.

Drinking a lot of water to lose weight is an urban myth:

I think the major benefit to drinking water is when you REPLACE other bad drinks (pop etc.) with water. It's not necessarily the fact you're drinking the water so much as you're NOT drinking pop/coffee etc. etc. :dunno:

i'm in a similar gut situation as you. I started Running for about 2 - 5k in the mornings (depends on my feet) and i recently started doing bikram hot yoga.

I've gone to the Gym and spent an hour and a half there and never felt like i did after a session in these yoga classes. This shit is brutal! your body strength and balance is pushed to its limits in 40 degree temps. Once your done and out, you will feel better than you ever did. i get a lot of muscle/joint aches, rather, i used to get them. Since i started going every 3 days. i dont feel them anymore. Its amazing. i also feel my muscles getting stronger and more toned out.

i definately recommend this along your daily routine.

Therin
here is a link to the postures you would be doing. they look comepletely messed up, cuz well, they are! You wont be able to do them to the fullest for a long time either.

Just go, do the best you can, never feel like a wimp if your body gives out, cuz this shit is BRUTAL!

now, go!

Dr. John Berardi's Grapplers Guide to Nutrition

^
Download this book, it's aimed towards athletes and specifically wrestlers/grapplers, but it's probably the best source for no-bullshit nutritional information, at least that I've found anyway. It's short and breaks everything down to the basics without talking over the readers head.

Running is okay, but to be honest there's lots of better choices for fitness. Therin gave a great example; the stretching and planking in those classes will more than likely burn just as many calories as running while providing you with benefits in flexibility and balance. Also because that type of training works so many muscle groups your body will continue burning more calories the day after as it repairs and recovers.

Most people's ideas behind losing weight and dieting are fucked. The goal should be to increase metabolism through healthy nutrition and physical activity. Changes in body composition will follow.

Make sure you eat...seriously youll probably have to eat more than you do now but if you like 90% of the people I talk to about diet your most likley undereating (and putting your body into starvation mode = storing calories as fat).

If you really want PM me and we can discuss some diets that would work well. I dont really know shit about

btw I finally went to the Servus center in St.Albert for the first time and Holy shit its nice. I wish I could afford a membership :(

ZEguy
The st albert rec center is shitty i think. Castledowns and southside YMCAs are FTW.
