*NEED ADVICE: How to deal with Insurance Companies? - Click HERE for Original Thread

colossus
My insurer ING just screwed me and doubled my rate. I filed a claim when someone T-Boned my car in a parking lot. ING decided not to assist and just ruled it 50-50, without an adjuster, or the facts. I decided not to follow thorough with the repair as it would just have raised my own rate. Now they doubled my rate, anyways. The repair would have been maybe $300 tops, but they raised my rate by $1500. WTF??!!! Is this ethical or even legal?

How do I deal with my insurer, who should I talk who is in charge? And who do I send a complaint about my insurer?

Does anyone have a link to the car insurance act or regulations?

HELP!!!

K well first off, why don't you just ask the insurance company, the one you just talked to, why they're adjusting your rates in the first place plain and simple. They'll have all the answers.

But hey talk to all the kids on 780tuners, they know everything:D

ever stop to think that since you are 50% at fault, they still consider it a fault and raise your rates accordingly? i believe they move you up 6 steps on the grid, so that means it can cost almost 60% more for just basic PLPD. and since your deciding not to fix your car, im assuming you have collision coverage, so the remaining portion of the increase was probably through that.

if perhaps you didnt file a claim or anything like that and your insurance company didnt have to pay out anyone, then your rate shouldnt have gone up.

and i think all parking lot accidents are 50/50 unless someone gets rear ended

You can call them ask questions, and if they think you insurance co is doing something wrong they'll deal with it. I've had to called them twice about insurance companies trying to screw me(one was trying to refuse to pay a shop rate, shop wanted $50/h they only want to pay $46/h cause they pay their prefered shops $47/h) IBC made a call and things worked out quickly.

Call your insurance company, talk to your broker and call them out on it. If they don't give you a legit reason and explain it to the extent that you want them to, cancel your insurance with them.

Regardless of what amount the damage was, your driving records will have a claim aganist it and it will move you up the grid. Each step up the grid is 5-10% increase on your rates regardless if the accident was big or small. They rate you on your driving skills, not the amounts of damage you did cause.

Yeah. I"m pretty choked about ING's shitty practices. 1st they say the other party is at fault, then a month later a different ING calls to say they're just going 50/50 (less work for them I suspect), so they've provided no service at all. Then they have the nerve to raise my rate more than double, even though I haven't claimed a penny from them. F*cking bastards. What am I paying for? NOthinng? ING is definitely shady. Who do I have to write to the president of ING?

ING screwed me over a while back too but I got it resolved. You should either follow these steps or skip straight to step 3 and contact the Ombudsman

hes a great guy he even contacted me to make sure the problem was solved when I wasn't even with ING insurance.
Heres more on what a Ombudsman does http://www.giocanada.org/whosgio.html#1
hope this helps

How did your fight go? What did you do in the end? Did you get satisfaction?

Scenario:

Guy t-bones my vehicle. My vehicle is stationary, he backs his rear passenger bumper into my car. He refuses to give his insurance info. I report it to insurance. They agree it's his fault. Then they call back a month later and say they're going 50/50. I don't bother getting my car fixed because the damage is maybe $300, and my own rate would go up. However now I find out that even though I didn't even claim a penny, my insurer has raised my rate by more than double $2500. And hypothically they could keep jacking me for 6 more years. ie. a $300 accident caused by some negligent old man = $9000 payment I have to make to my insurer.

I am I being screwed? What can I do? My broker suggested dealing with ING's obudsman, but what if they don't dick. How do I escalate this to get justice?

Lukesky
If it was only $300 worth of damage, why did you even bother to report it to your insurance company?

When he hit you and didn't want to give his insurance info, did he try and say, "Let's not go through insurance, it'll screw us both? There's barely any damage on your car, we can figure this out?"

Insurance companies will raise your rate if they find out you've had an accident and if they rule it your fault or partly your fault, regardless if they have to pay out or not. It's based on "driving abilities".

For $300 you should have really just filed a police report before heading straight towards insurance... and then have had the cops go get him after you gave the licence plate.

All insurance companies are "out to get us" so try to not deal with them as much as possible. You'll know for next time.

colossus
I think I"m going to have to go through the company Ombudsman. Do you think they will be fair and arms length? Or will the insurance company continue to mistreat it's customers?

colossus
Has anyone ever appealled their insurers decision?
