Drift practices are starting up at Castrol on Thursday, May 1 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. and run every second Thursday throughout the summer. We will run a beginner day every second practice where we'll actually split up the track time and teach basics to those wanting to learn. The first day for that will be May 15.

You're more than welcome to come out on May 1 though to start learning. There are plenty of experienced drivers who are willing to give others tips and ridealongs so don't be afraid to ask questions.

You will need a minimum Snell 2000 or newer helmet as well as a car in solid operating condition (solid battery tie down, no loose items in vehicle, no significant fluid leaks, wheel bearings in good condition, no steering play, good brakes and tires). Feel free to click on the link in my sig if you want to find out more specifics about what you'll want to bring as well as how the practices work.

Anyone else with questions, please feel free to fire away.

How often do you go through tires??

Ruiner
great, if I see more kids on the regular streets trying to act like FNF kids, i'm gonna start dropping nails and screws.

I'd assume that they take a look at:

- Wheel bearings (side wobble test, try shaking the wheel back and forth at the 12 and 6 o'clock position. It shouldn't move)
- Steering free play (there shouldn't be any)
- Fluid leaks (Sweating is generally okay, but anything that leaves standing fluid is a no no)
- Battery tie down (no bungie cords, battery MUST not be able to move.)

The basic idea is that your car won't fall apart or hurt anyone at the event.

euro_ftw
hahaha imagine if this shit happenes. oh wait i have to check my car toofuckin 20 years old cars and still pimpin.

I hope you're saying "great" as in "great, good to hear you guys are taking the drifting to the track."

We're doing this to keep people from trying to learn how to drift on the streets. Regular practices mean that you can plan ahead to get out there and get your car sideways.

As for tires, it all depends on the car. The heavier the car and the more power you have, the more tires you're going to go through. Even with almost double the power of stock my car didn't go through tires too quickly because it's pretty light. Combine weight and a lot of power and you'll go through tires quickly.

What are you thinking of bringing out?:dunno:

KaJe
just take bow wows advice on drifting

RIP THAT E-BRAKE!!
and try not to hit my car

RobTurbo

If it hasn't been removed the entire version (in english no less) is on Youtube.

choda
I would be interested in drift practice session as well.

But I kinda wonder if my stock e30 would be adaquate to start drifting. Would it be necessary to tighten up e-brake?

I know I have stock lsd and 2 worn tires for rear:D

Cheemoney
where can you get helmets?

iLLlegal
this sounds like a goodtime. Ive always thought about doing some drifting... not in the Z of course. I hope to get something worthy of the track sometime this summer and come out. it looks so fun!!! :blue:

I believe any full face street motorcycle helmet is legal. don't quote me on it though. you can buy helmets at jb's designed for racing I think they are only $150 max. but try like peromance parts center and any other perfomance parts place that is into racing, worst off they can tell you where to buy them.

Cheemoney
thanks. that's what my co-worker said. something about those full face motorcycle helmets. but he wasn't sure if those would qualify under the standards.

euro_ftw
i saw that movie on youtube and i learned alot. gonna try some in the weekend in empty parkin lot:fingersx:

Cheemoney
the cops can give us stunting tickets if we try in parking lots right? or for that fact anywhere?

13B'sand4G63's
some of my friends go to this church WECA by the grange and parkland its fair sized lot with no one there past 11 and cops are rare from what i know

True true...:( It's unfortunate and risky, but what're you gonna do? Hasn't stopped me yet...

But really, I think it makes a lot more sense going out to an empty parking lot or research park at night where there's no people or other cars at your own risk rather than on the streets putting others' lives in danger. Still, no matter how true that may be, it isn't an effective excuse to a cop.

So here's to hoping we don't caught in the near future lol.

Haha, if anybody's interested, I'm usually out in the research park by South Common after 10 or so at least once a week. Lots of straight road, lots or parking lots, some decent wide 90 degree corners...no people or cars in sight at night. Haven't ran into any police yet.:fingersx:

13B's, ya all around that place. By Dell, by the Research Facility lake, Syncrude etc...I've been there with the new car like 3-4 times last week when it was still nice and then once Saturday evening when it started to snow...car's been parked since.

euro_ftw

project.D.
Bah, mine's under a pile of snow...no garage = :(

You guys know the faculty of engineering parkade with the epic view of downtown? Thinking that the top level covered with snow might be pretty good for some fun as of now...;)

euro_ftw
never been there:(

13B'sand4G63's
i didnt know the dell parking lot was big enough

euro_ftw
lets check it out on friday , roads should be clean by then.:D

project.D.
Working till 9 or 10 but after that I'm down for sure.;) All the snow won't be gone either which isn't a bad thing. It'll be slick enough for some good fun without having to worry about getting stuck.

Cheemoney

man, i don't get paid enough times in a month to save up for all this gear. i also gotta find anchors for my battery too.

and if the weather network is ever right, it should be around +4 on friday? sooo i'm gonna take a stab and say the trip to dell would just as slick as the parking lot?

ChromeDragon
The whole reason we're holding the regular drift practices is so guys can come and learn out at the track where it is NOT stunting. It's a safe, legal place to learn the basics and develop your skills.

13B'sand4G63's
if it warms up and snow melts would it be next thursday chrome ?

u guys pm me aplace and then we can set it up on friday or saturday.

Are you kidding me? You ask about a place where you can legally drift and then you plan out places to do it illegally in the same thread?

Providing the snow is gone we should be a go for May 1. Castrol will have the final call on that, but we'll have an idea by the start of next week.
