| are plate covers and the photo blocker spray legal in alberta? |
|
|
| SilverNeonRacer |
| nope.. technically clear plate covers like wallymart sells are illegal. you cannot cover the plate with anything. |
|
|
| ron1 |
photo spray is illegal
plate covers like wally mart sells are not illegal
i had one on a previous vehicle and got pulled over for various other things but the offficers never said anything to me about the cover
so this is why i think they are legal
also if the one like walmart sells is illegal dont you think that personel from the law enforcement would have told the company that.
cops are in there everyday
i'm sure one of them has seen those |
|
|
| Prudz_lude |
| just becaues you weren't asked about it doesn't mean it isn't illegal. Tons of people get pulled over with tint in the front windows but the cops ignore it. Does that make it legal? |

| Ive seen a cop pull a guy over and pull out a screwdriver and unscrew his plate cover, so I'd say they're illegal |

BLOCKER pm'd
waiting on response( might be a while)
i think it depends on the attitude of the officer
i know people who have had them on their cars for years and because the never attracted any attention by the police they never got a ticket for it. |

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard...
The Law is The Law.
Laws don't change because of the attitude of an officer. The only thing that might change is the likelihood of getting a ticket for an offense. |
|
|
| MX5 Miata Guy |
| Correct. A ticketable offense is still up the discretion of the officer. That said, it is against the law to obscure your license plate with anything (photo spray, polarized cover, clear cover, trailer hitch ball, etc....) and it must be illuminated by a light (just as illegal to put the plate inside your car behind the rear window). |

Really?
I thought a plate in the rear window was fine.
Maybe it is illegal as there is no light to light it up at night? :dunno: |
|
|
| AudiInProgress |
| License Plate in the rear window is illegal... However, it's better than nothing at all, and most officers will not pull you over for it. I would presume that if you were driving like a dick, and got pulled over for stunting or some such, they would also throw the book at you for not having the plate mounted in the correct place. |

Just because something's illegal doesn't mean you shouldn't at least try. (to get away with it).

I just checked the Vehicle equip regs, not in there.. hmm
could be in the rules of the road or the federal regs... but I know somewhere in writeing that you can't cover a plate, as you don't own the plate.
as far as why they don't make wally mart pull them off the shelves is cause you can put those novalty plates on the front of your car and use the covers to keep them nice and purdy..
I've been stopped by a detective who threatened to impound my car for a plate cover, another cop kicked my car and ripped off the clear plastic bag that the plates come in(it was taped on the back all nicely so the plate was visible) I told her it was just there to keep the plate clean. |
|
|
| ron1 |
| Your right laws don't change. it's still illeagal to obstruct your plate but the officer may let you off with a warning if you have a clean record and may request you to remove the cover without confiscating it |

Probably because the plate was obstructed by something, like snow, or an illegal plate cover... Including plastic bags. And the officer in question didn't want to bend all the way over and use their hands. |
|

| Was it a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick demolishing not only the plate, but leaving his foot imprint on the back of the block from one swift kick? |

Car was clean, they kicked it first I think to see if it would wrinkle(it was taped pretty tight, you had to look to see if it was there) thens he bent down and ripped it off with her hands, and hands me the bits and pieces of plastic heh twas on whyte ave |

Yeah... and?
I don't see a problem with that. |

| haha a cop pulled up beside me and told me to take off the plastic or else ill get a ticket 2 summers ago in the 510 |

If a cop touched any spot of my car with their boot, a complaint would 100% be filed against them.
Also I've been told by an officer ANYTHING over the plate IS Illegal. |

ok but that spray that makes the plate glossy...... how would they ever prove that it's "too glossy"
unless they carry a camera and take a picture with a high powered flash |

Most officers have digital camera's in the cruisers nowadays. |

lol yeah but the flash on a point and shoot camera wont create enough glare to make the plate disappear |

With out posting the section, The plate cover, even clear is considered obstruction of the plate, they are NOT legal.
Same with putting the plate in your rear window.
sorry, rushed answer... busy at work |

| thanks for the info blocker.... what about the clear coat? |
|

| I remember watching 2 mythbusters episodes that proved on several different tests that the spray coats, clear coats, plastic covers, etc do not work to block the photo radar shit anyways... |

Which is true....
Like with mine one cop asked about the bag, he said "What's witht he plastic bag, you know that doesn't stop photo right?" My reply like always was "I know, it's just there to keep the plate clean"
I know a guy who got a ticket for his plate being all cracked up and rusting just from normal weathering |

that actually happened to a friend of mine's husband... it was at night and the cop pulled out a screwdriver and took away the plate because it was cracked and gave him a ticket... had to go to court and fight it, plus his truck was stuck in the middle of no where without a plate :dunno: |

Which is odd cause you can't have a vehicle on a public roadway without a plate... suprised they didn't tow it or just tell him to get a new plate come renewal, depending how far away renewal was. |

He may have been towed, or it may have been in a parking lot? I can't remember the exact details...
kind of a weird situation... it was cracked due to normal weather wearing and what not |

Okay... And... When your headlight burns out from normal wear and tear... Do you just drive without headlights? No... You get a new one. |

True, but part of the "complaint" I guess is you can't do anything to protect the plate to keep it from wearing down |
|
|
| e46 |
ok but a plate doesnt magically decide to break down one day....
if you see that it's in bad condition, you change it... |

Clear coat would be unlawful, however, It would have to be noticable to even get pulled over.
It would be harder to prove then the plate cover. |

I notice that stuff every time it's on a car when your headlights hit it you can barely read there plate, Its usually very bright and anoying as hell i alwayz wonder why people use that spray as its so easy to spot. |
