Not so much. It's what everyone has been talking about (and most people thought already happened) for a good two years now.

There sure are lots of people that like driving boring appliances.

Toyota has "grabbed the lead" in the first, and sometimes second quarter for a few years running, now. GM has so far managed to pull it out of the fire by year end, but it's only a matter of time. Toyota is making more and more inroads into the industrial sector, and their full-size pickup market keeps expanding, too, one of the last strongholds of the domestic 'big three'.

Though I am a convert myself to the Toyota camp, I think that this is only due to a reputation that Toyota has for producing cars that just work. Maybe a Corolla or Camry is "boring" -- but it's boring because nothing "exciting" happens to it, like unexpectedly breaking.

^ boring as in no fun to drive.

They are perfectly good cars for lots of people. Just not enthusiasts. At least with their current line up of cars.

You must be so far inside the 'camp' that you can't hear the news about Camry's, and even Corolla's, breaking on mass lately. The Tundra is even worse.

Really, this has everything to do with having a good stretch while your biggest competitor had a bad stretch. Even if things have evened out in the quality/reliability ring, you can't stop the Public Perception Wave. Good for them, though. It means a lot for what is essentially a family company to make it to the world's biggest.

Absolutely, agree 100%. Every word

As much I despise GM, I wouldn't buy a Toyota either. There is absolutely nothing in their lineup that stirs anything in me in the slightest.

SilverE90
Yeah, neither would be on my list of prefered companies, but at least GM makes some cars with personality.

I'm sure that will change soon though because Toyota definitely has the money to do what it wants and can compete with whoever they want if they choose too. ISF is a good example of that (even though it still wouldn't be my choice in that category either, it is a damn good car).

Toyota might be better with their car and vans, but when it comes to truck, small or full-size, they need to keep out.

I wouldn't trust buying a truck outside of the domestics.

Cars, they're equal.

I don't defend domestics, just some GM's. But thanks for making me sound like some kind of demigod. I drive all sorts, and there are good cars from all over, and crap from all over. Competition is good, and if it weren't for Toyota and Honda coming in and building bulletproof cars for a long time, while the domestics cut corners everywhere, we'd still be getting Cavalier's and Breeze's and Escort's. We should be seeing some great cars in the next decade, if CAFE or OPEC doesn't destroy the works.

lol i didn't mean it in a bad way, . its just that everytime i see someone put down a domestic or soemthing im always sure to find you there :)
and its a good thing pretty much all of us on this site here besides the srt4 etc. fans are importonlylovers except for the select few (you) that defend domestics

$1.20/L has me thinking Toyota at this point.

"in the camp"... Sure, whatever. I'll admit that it's been a while since I was looking at buying a car, so I may not be up on the latest about stuff, but last I looked at my odometer, I still called Toyotas reliable. Sure, it's old information, but that's what a reputation is built on. If that's changed, then it'll show in the future.

At one time I was a die-hard GM guy. Among my friends (Also domestic V8 types) my car was considered to be one of the more reliable in the group. By the time any of those odometers got to HALF what my odometer reads now, those cars were scrap, and some of those cars were built after the Toyota that I'm driving now. :dunno:

So maybe the current crop of Toyotas is having trouble. Last time I checked (Admittedly a couple of years ago) the domestics were still at the bottom of the pile reliability wise.

This is not, by the way, something that I'm happy about. I really wish people on this continent could design and build a good product. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter certainly appears to be that cars built in North America aren't built well. Statistics bear me out on this.

Would I buy a new Toyota? Well, maybe a Prius, but certainly not as a DRIVER'S car, I'd buy that for fuel economy as a commuter vehicle. However, even at $1.25/L for gas, I could buy an awful lot of gas before I caught up to the monthly payments on a new vehicle, so I just keep driving my Supra, and no. I won't buy a new Toyota... Nor anything else.

No, There's nothing in Toyota's current lineup that I'd buy as a car that I'd really want to get into in the morning. Can't think of much in the domestic market for that either.

IMO, the trend towards SUVs killed off most of the cars that I was interested in.

Toyota won 4 categories plus the overall winner.

"The Truck King Challenge is an independent event, produced by TruckKing Media Group and is not sanctioned or sponsored by vehicle manufacturers. As with many independent tests, however, manufacturers do pay a fee to enter and the fee is the same for all. "
