I'm looking at purchasing this TV
http://www2.visions.ca/catalogue/ca...amp;menuLevel=2
I do not currently have HD cable, I watch regular DVD's on My Xbox 360. I basically looking for something bigger and better than the 4 year old 27" Sony I have now.
Would it be a mistake to buy a TV that only puts out 720P? I'm just insecure about the new fangled TV shit
Question #2 Would it be better to buy a smaller TV at the same price with 1080P or this TV @ 720? |

For that price you really cant go wrong..
But if you're replacing a tv thats 4 years old with a tv that will slowly go out because its only 720p, why not just go up to 1080p and have it around for a couple more years?
Xbox looks amazing on 1080p - still good on 720, but it is noticable. |

Depends on how much smaller you go - that one you listed is a 40 right?
Check this one out.. 42" and 300 more with 1080p

They dont really offer anything smaller than a 40 with 1080p, and from what I can see, its going to be more expensive. |

| 720P looks very good and I doubt you'll even notice much of a diff on a 40" TV anyways. You'll be very impressed with it I'm sure. |

| Resolution is, at best, a distant 4th place in the things you need to look at for picture quality. Contrast ratio, colour saturation, colour accuracy, are much more important. For most people it is very hard to notice the difference between 720p & 1080p from 6ft away or more on a 40" TV. Looking up specs unfortunately doesn't provide much help either. You usually just have to go to the store & compare them by watching them. |

| my roommate has a 56" dlp that does 720p, a friend has the exact same model that does 1080p. i honestly can't tell a difference. maybe if they were side by side i may be able to. |

| If you're looking to spend under $1000... 720p is fine. If you're looking to spend $1500 or so... Then go for a 1080p set. |

| I also have a question, is there a noticeable different between 60Hz and 120Hz TV? I'd use it to play video games/blu ray. |

Some people can. And 120hz you my as well get everything going to turn to that soon buy once then you won't regret it. |

Primer:
Movies are usually 24 fps
TV is usually 60 fps
PS2 games are usually at 30 fps
PS3 games are usually at 60 fps
120 Hz with interpolation is good for anything with fast motion.
120 Hz with 5:5 pulldown is good for most movies.
Interpolation basically means that it takes any information it gets & figures out what the "in between" frames should look like. This leads to a really smooth looking picture, sometimes too smooth. For sports, gaming & action movies this feature makes it look really good, but for anything that is slower moving, especially movies, it makes it look fake. A common phrase you'll hear is that it "makes movies look like soap operas". Interpolation is often advertised as "motion enhancement" or similar.
5:5 pulldown is the solution for movies looking fake. It basically just displays the same image 5 times in a row, rather than trying to assume what the in between frames will be. TVs with this option will make movies look slightly better than with a standard 60 Hz TV.
Opinion:
If you're doing a lot of gaming 120 Hz will look slightly better & would probably be worth it. |

| You noted that you watch "regular" DVD movies, which ever tv you get, make sure you get a good Up-converting player. I was amazed what a difference that made. Good Luck Shopping. |

| I'm not too sure what an upconverting DVD player is but I watch all my DVD's on my Xbox 360. |
