Not sure if this is the right section but i need some advice. I was about to make payment on a boat i was purchasing when i got an email from an old ad.
The fellow wants to offer me a trade for my Camaro his offer is a 1990 Bayliner Capri it's in awesome condition and is 21Ft nice big boat and again in awesome condition. The worth of the boat seams to be around 9000-11000 bucks. However im stretched between giving my car for it. But doing it means a new project car soon what would you guy's do? Thanks
Oh and i would use the boat and i would use the car so.. Iunno! |

I don't like boats... but I also do not like Camaro's. IMO a nice car beats any other type of toy.
How often will you be able to use this boat? If you live on a lake it is a worthwhile investment because it will see use. If you live in the city and have a job/life you will probably be luck to make it out to a lake 8times/year. If you are passionate about boating, go for it. Personally it wouldn't be something I would spend money on, but w/e. |

| I wouldn't trade it for a Bayliner. I heard that they aren't the best quality boats out there. They are like "entry level" boats. IMO you can get something better and how would you tow that thing? You would have to buy a truck. |

lake wabamun has always been a great lake for boating with a decent launch and good prov park, and its only 30 mins west of the city..........although yu might want to check on the water conditions after this whole CN rail spill contamination info came up again the past few months.
Alberta beach (Lac St Anne) is another decnt boating lake 45 mins west, so is lake isle (i think 45 mins west).
As for camaros, i think this sums it all up for camaro owners......

I didn't know you were going to tow it with that truck, sorry :)
I would also look at how often you plan on using it this summer and where you plan on storing it in the winter. Also you will need your boat license, all that crap, etc. And honestly there are no really good lakes within an hour's distance from the city. |

hmm switch it up..
you stated by trading you'd then have a NEW project car, therefore id say go for it...new projects are always exciting:thumbup: |

"Recreational Boat Operator License Requirements Now in Force in Canada
New regulations requiring operators of all power driven recreational boats in Canada to obtain an "Operator Card" (an operator license) were adopted by the government during the week of January 11, 1999.
Operators of power driven boats will have to obtain "Operator Cards" according to the following schedule:
September 15, 1999 - All operators born after April 1, 1983.
September 15, 2002 - All operators of craft under 4 m (a little over 13 feet) in length, including personal watercraft.
September 15, 2009 - All other operators (including people over the age of 55).
These requirements also apply to sailboats equipped with an engine.
Also effective after April 1999, if you are under 12 years of age, and not directly supervised*, you will not be able to operate a power-driven boat of more than 10 hp. If you are over 12, but under 16, and not directly supervised*, you will not be able to operate a power driven boat of more than 40 hp.
*Directly supervised means accompanied and directly supervised in the boat by a person 16 years of age.
You must be 16 years of age to operate a personal watercraft.
Foreign boats visiting Canada for less than 45 consecutive days are exempt. American boaters who have an operator card, license or the equivalent, issued by their State will not be restricted to the 45 consecutive day limit before having to obtain an "operator card" in Canada.
For more information on Boating Safety & Regulations contact the Canadian Coast Guard at: http://www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/main_e.htm They have a list of classroom and internet training providers in Alberta, as well as a list of many different boating courses offered."
He doesnt need a licence yet. As for boating it self, I bought a brand new seadoo GTX last year and I love it. I was out pretty much every weekend, and would goto Pigeon Lake because my g/fs parents have a lot out there. This year I will be going there, and also want to try Sylvan.

There's a few lakes in Alberta... IE: In the "Lakeland" region.
If you think you'll get the use out of the boat to justify the cost, then I'd do it. Just remember that we have like 2 to 3 months at most of decent boating season.
Also... Cold Lake is shitty, it's always choppy and the water is really cold (duh). But within 2 to 2.5 hours East of Edmonton there's a lot of nice smaller lakes perfect for watersports and fishing. Plus you don't have the cluster fuck of boaters that is Sylvan Lake. |

| im heading to cold lake as soon as it gets nice to try and grab a few big lake trout sitting up by the surface due to the cold water :P but ya its kinda a shitty boat lake. pigeon is good. not deep, but big. wabamun is fine. i was fishing it all last summer. monster jackfish in it. i saw people water skiing too. boats are awesome you just need to get your use out of it. |

And all the oil in the water helps keep the boat's engine leg nice and lubricated.
I would check out pricing on some comparable boats, that seems a bit high. My parents bought an immaculate Bayliner Capri, 1993 I believe, in about 1998 for $15k. 125hp Honda engine, enclosable cabin, etc. etc.

+2 if you're going to trade your camaro, trade it for another car. |

Thing about boats is they all depreciate to around the same point.. as far as 16-22 cruisers go..
You can get a 2002 campion 535 for 12,000 or so. I'd look for a newer boat. Older bayliners are not worth that much I dont think.. You can get a new 180 with 150hp for 16,000...
Lakes:
JACKFISH
SYLVAN
WABAMUN
LONG
those are my favourites.. |
