New Area code, and 10 digit dialing - Click HERE for Original Thread

SilverNeonRacer
So I've been hearing this rumor for a while, but i just got a note today at work that as of June 22 we'll have a new area code, 587, and we'll have to dial 10 digit numbers.

I was on Telus' website, and haven't found any information about it... I found out about BC and the new area code for cell phones... but nothing for AB.

Anybody know anything? Links? Are they doing a mass switch like with the 403-780 thing.. or are new numbers going to be on the new area code?

I've been hearing about this too. There's gonna be a new area code within Edmonton, or something like that. I dunno if they're gonna issue new numbers, or if new services will get the new numbers. Anyone else hear more, some details maybe?

BTW: Now I think about it, is the name "780 Tuners" because of our area code, 780? I just noticed that.

So only new numbers will get the new code, but we still have to dial 10 digits.

Graphicdude
That's going to take some time to get use. It's bad enough already people trying to dial 7 numbers on their cell phone while driving, wtf is going to happen when they add 3 more digits to the mix :D

XtraX
yeah lower BC is already like that. It's going to be rather gay IMO.

chu77
Toronto areas been like that for years. It's going take some time to get use to.

That story says the areacode kicks in in Sept, and the 10 digit dialing is mandatory in Sept.. yet the notice I got at work was the number would be in place June, but local calls to other "780"s wouldn't need the 10 digit dialing til sept.

Around here we only use 4 digits... ok, we dial 7, but if somebody asks for your number you say 3245, and they know the first bit is 675, or 689, or 676 depending on which town you live in or by... you it'll be 780, 3245 or the 578, 3245... this sucks... oh well.. I'll just have to program everything into my phone.

LOL!

wubba_65
exactly. program everything into the phone as 780-xxx-xxxx, or 587-xxx-xxxx and everything is taken care of. Most phones nowadays have a "prepend" option in the address book so it is relatively easy to add in the area code to existing numbers.

SilverNeonRacer
If I dial a 7 digit from here to say edmonton (long distance) my phone auto adds the 1-780.. so current numbers my phone will be smart enough to dial properly... any 578 numbers I'll just enter as that.

cupcake
I got that memo from work about a month ago. Actually, my work's voice mail system has already switched to the 10 digit system.

June to September will be the grace period; however, if you dial 7 digits instead of 10 in the grace period, you'll get a friendly reminder about the change, every frickin' time. I always enter 780 before every number in my phone for text messaging purposes anyways. That shouldn't be too big of a problem.

So, would you have to dial 780 before 911?

BigTrucker
If I'm calling a cell phone in the same city with a different area code am i going to get charged long distance?

All I see if Rogers screwing me some more.

SilverNeonRacer
I find it funny I found nothing about this on Telus' webpage though.. maybe next month..

chewy
Starting on Sept 1, 2008 it will be mandatory to start dialing with 10 digits. IE you will have to press 780 to dial any local number.

SilverNeonRacer
chewy, I think that was covered already.

But if they're using 578 all over alberta for new numbers how will we know if it's long distance or not? they should have a new second area code for each of the current likr 781 and 404 (if not already in use :P )

chu77
They will not charge you long distance if the number is dial from 780 to 578 or the other way around

When I was up in the north west territories you would have to dial a 10 digit number for the police, and it changed as you went from place to place up there - I would never be able to remember it if I was in an emergency. Guess it doesnt matter since they dont have cell service almost anywhere anyways!

I can see that being true if both numbers are based in saw edmonton, but an Edmonton 780 calling a Calgary based 578 would get a long distance bill, just might not know it til bill time.

cupcake
When I get to work tomorrow, I'll post bits and pieces of the 10 digit dialing email on here.

It talks about the new area code and such. The way I remember it is that if it's long distance, you'll have to put the 1 in front; thus, making an 11 digit number. If it's local, then the 10 digit will do.

I guess it's still kind of like now when you call a long distance 780 number. It won't connect unless you dial the 1 beforehand.

I doubt it since they are already able to differentiate between a 780 number in edmonton and peace river, or a 403 number in red deer or calgary

midnite
glad i have always 780d all the numbers in my phone when i add them. that would be a lot of button pushing
