WTF is wrong with my internet?! - Click HERE for Original Thread

NATO
For the past 3 days, my internet connection has been really screwy and I'm hoping one of you guys will know what's wrong.

We have cable from Shaw (I believe) and it's run through a wireless D-Link modem so I can connect my iMac downstairs. Everything was working peachy for a few months and all of a sudden things went haywire.

Every 3-4 minutes, I'll lose my connection to the internet for 30 seconds. My wireless signal is strong, and I see other computers on my network, but no webpages will load, and any files downloading stall out.

I've tried re-starting the modem a few times, keeping it unplugged for 5 minutes, hoping it will re-set, but it doesn't make a difference.

Any idea why this would happen? It's becoming a big inconvenience, especially when sending files to my work address over email.

this has been happening to me quite a bit lately as well, and i am als with shaw.

i loose signal both on my computer line and on my xbox line, but i found that restarting the router helps out quite a bit.

best bet is to give shaw a call, i havent gotten around to making the call, and since i am pretty much the only one on the net in my house nothing is gonna be happening till i do it.

good luck tho, and share the wisdom once you resolve the issue:thumbup:

Are you in newer area's? We used to have Shaw. It did exactly that. Cut in and out every few minutes. Apparently because it was a new area, they hadn't installed the proper capacity cables or some bs like that. So we just switched to Telus.

I have the exact same problem. Shaw. D-Link modem. Even using a Mac downstairs. It pisses me off... but I just switched over to my neighbour's network so I don't have to deal with it.

I didnt have a dlink but i had shaw come out. And the techie had to put a filter on before the modem. So far so good. From what the guy was telling me is that the power going into the modem was too strong for it, so thats why the filter was put on. Doesnt make too much sense, but its works now.

I live in new area (Mill Creek Meadows), have Shaw, and had the same problem. I called Shaw. They checked out the quality of their data line to my house, and found it too "dirty".

They sent a tech out, he changed some wiring and components both inside and outside the house, and now it works a lot better.

Get Shaw to check the quality of your line.

When your internet cuts out does your channel 2 and 3 appear to be noisy?..
I had that problem, abd it was a problem with the signal coming into my house, it was too weak. Anyhow they sent someone out checked teh signal everywhere and installed a booster.
It could be an internal problem at your place(s) if you had installed in compatible signal splitters. Have them check those too.

I've been having problems with my Shaw cable dropping signal every few days too. I phoned them up and they admitted the wiring in my area is pretty old, and that my signal is rather weak. But they havent done a damn thing about it?!?!?! What can I request them to do at this point?

Shaw is in the middle of doing major upgrades all over the city.

Also, I'd be more willing to point the finger at the cheap routers than the service provider, I've got a feeling if you guys rebooted your routers a little more often you might find the service to be a bit better.

I live downtown, with shaw and a D-link wireless....problem has been happening for a good 3 months now. I just hit the repair button and its good for 10 min or so. The only problem is with DLing stuff.

If plug straight into the modem it works all day long so Im thinking its the wireless router.

As most people have said, the problems with your internet is your shitty internet provider. But then again, with basically the only other inexpensive option being telus (160kbps max download rate FTL!) your basically screwed. As others have recommended, call 310-SHAW and bitch them out till they do something about it. Be warned about up to 2 hour hold times, and if they give you the option to leave your number and call you back do it, cause they'll call.

happens to me on my laptop using a wireless signal off a linksys router. signal cuts out no pages will load, but i can still access the network. if i reboot my computer its fine again.

I too have been having the exact same problem. Im downtown and usually at peak times during the day or for that matter in the middle of the day. It feels like something is using all my bandwidth, it takes forever to load pages. Restarting the router helps for the most part or hard resetting the modem also helps. Im on a mac and using airport. It guessing it must be a problem with shaw??
