Tax return question - Click HERE for Original Thread

Turb0.ed.v6
Hey guys, I was always told that if you make under a certain amount a year (I think 12grand?) you dont have to file income tax.
As a student a few years ago I worked part-time at two places both which I made very little a year and did not require me to file taxes. HOWEVER I was never told that by filing your T4 you get a fucking refund!

so my question is.. is it too late to file for tax returns of those two jobs? When is the deadline for that? Although I dont expect to get much in return, I did work there for one and a half years. Why throw away money?

AudiInProgress
No. It's not too late to file. My wife didn't file for like the first 3 years that she worked... And I believe we found out it was under 9 grand... But that may have changed.

flatboy
I think your always suposed to file and though its over due, its never to late.

You should always file even if you have 0 income. Free GST money!

And they calculate your RRSP contribs, and the next year it's easier to file (if you do make money).

Deadline is end of this month, but you can file late.

Dude, I get a real kick out of your signature.

Under the minimum amount you shouldn't be paying any tax. That means that any tax that you paid during the year should come back to you. If you're making that little you can also get GST cheques as well.

You really only need to file by April 30 if you're paying I believe. Otherwise after that they start charging interest.

a lot of people (myself included) when a student and working very little, ask our employers to take off the taxes anyways - that way at the end of the year we get the money back... not a huge deal, but a nice 'gift' every april to have some cash back in hand... doesnt make a difference in the end... other than feeling like you get a bonus every year...
also, when you are hired and fil out those tax forms, if you don't read the part about being a student or making less than XX amount, you may have been paying the taxes anyways... should always file a return, even if you made like $23.50 for the year... you never know

Momentum
H&R block only charges about $30 to file your T4s if your a student... compared to I think $70-$90 if you arent. Bring a school ID with you

If its your first time filing your taxes at a place say like H&R, you have to wait to get the cheque in the mail (mine took 9 days), After the first year if you use H&R block again they will pay you your return right there

NICE Thanks for all the great advice guys! I think I'll stop by canada place tomorow to get another copy of my T4's.

30 bucks at H&R  they will find all the little bits and pieces you can claim on as well. plus as a student you get a free SPC card lol - cant complain about free shit.

also, if you are a student in post secondary, make SURE you collect all your T-whateverthefuckstheyare from the university - you can bank them as tuition reimbursement, and when you finally have a real job and owe money on taxes, you can use these to make up for those tax credits and come out even, so you don't owe (until you run out of them... but if you paid a lot of tuition over the years like me, you will have a good chunk o' change to bank in credits) - you can usually print them out online from your school or just go there and get copies.

If you make under 20K/year, it's FREE at ufile.ca and it's online, and you can do your own taxes.

Very very easy to do, and it's a good habit to learn yourself. Takes about 10 minutes (really!).

You can deduct your tuition, bus passes, medical, etc etc. And you can easily 'carry forward' the bigger expenses when you guys start making big money :)

a tax specialist will find money that you didnt even think you were contributing to.. or to organizations you didnt know

Here's my problem. I have a part-time job that I've had for a year and a half now. Last summer I had a seperate full-time. The full-time took taxes out, totalling to around $400. My part-time didn't. I'm still in high school, so i'm supposed to get everything except EI back. My moms co-worker (who used to work for the government with taxes and stuff) is doing our taxes for us. I tried to do it myself using a program, but I though there was something I'm missing. Anyways, she did it, using a program, and got the same results. According to these tax programs, I only get $100 back beacsue my part-time doesn't take out taxes. I dont understand this. I'm a student, so therefore, even if I they didn't take any out, I shouldn't owe anything. Even if I did, would I not eventually get it back?

ChromeDragon
Jesus, I get almost $1,000 taken off a cheque.

Is it possible that you made over the minimum amount? I'm guessing by the little amount of tax you paid you didn't but who knows?
