Kenwood In dash system KVT617DVD issues - Click HERE for Original Thread

I dunno if any of you guys own this thing or not, but I bought it about a year ago off ebay (so Kenwood won't honor warranty) and its giving me some grief. I may actually just grab a new system if problems keep getting worse.

heres the current 2 issues that are really pissin me off:

1: the face controls (not the touch ones, the actual physical buttons) are no longer controlling the right functions. ie: Volume up changes disks/folders, and volume down puts it into that almost mute mode. But the touch screen and remote buttons work fine

2: sometimes the system will just loose power and it may not come back for a few seconds or so. I thought it was in direct relationships to bumps or something, but it will do it at random now. All the connections are solid and I've checked the solder points on the wiring harness and everything is AOK.

If I do change over to a new system I'll sell this one to whoever wants it...but the new system MUST be a Kenwood due to my 10 disc Kenwood changer and Sirrius reciever.

If anyone can recomend a good Kenwood system thats under $1000 for me that would be awesome too. Perfer if it can have NAV and Bluetooth as well.

Yay Kenwood.

Okay, step one is to make sure that any contacts are clean. If it's a removable face unit, check all of the contacts between the face and the main unit. These are generally a serial interface, so any crap on there can mess with the controls. If it's not a removable face unit, or flip down face, then start looking for crap in the buttons themselves. Obviously the buttons themselves are working, since it's doing SOMETHING, but see if anything got into there.

You don't have a warranty anyway, if all else fails, you might as well open it up and look for obvious circuit problems, or general grime.

I long ago decided that it would be a cold day in Hell before I bought another Kenwood product. Had one once. The cd would skip every time I so much as shifted gears. I took it back, got an Alpine and never looked back.

x2
except my brand preference now lies with Pioneer

Dan_Gyoba
Yeah, I have some Pioneer equipment around too. I liked their stuff much better before they started putting the organic plasma displays on everything. Well at least everything that comes close to having hte feature set that I want.

I've had six Kenwood units over the years, and this one is the first one I've had problems with.

I'm looking into one of these as a replacement:

or one of these:

or if I stick with Kenwood one of these:

I'd perfer single DIN so I can keep my lil shelf that fills the lower din slot on my dash. Theres not many lil 'shelfs' in a Focus... another reason why I regret my car purchase.

I wanna stay with Kenwood because I got the 6disc changer and sirrius radio connection... and if I switch to Clarion I will have to get a new changer....but i won't get sirrius, it's kinda a waste of money in my eyes.

I also want to get something that has a nav kit as I might be moving to Vancouver this time next year and it would be nice to have something telling me where to go thats not my wife.

Hey another ST owner... Have you checked out the club forum?

nope

I acquired my car out of desperation unfortunatley.

My Grand-am died, my RX was (is still) without a working motor, the Jag XJ12 sucks gas back and has no AC...and I was getting married in two weeks so I needed something that could make it to Pentiction without falling apart... so new car time!

As lame as it sounds no one would give me a loan on my own since I was (still am) selling cars...and when your 100% paid on comission the banks won't even think about talking to you on ANY loan more than $5 unless you've been at the same dealership for a year and have been in the industry for at least 2 with 2 T1 slips. So I had to get a co-sign with me only being in the industry for 3 months. My dad would only co-sign on a car that I was selling, so I got the ST because it:
A) was a manual
B) had a sunroof
C) wasn't THAT slow
D) wasn't a truck or SUV

I wanted to get an Impreza, Rabbit, Golf, or Mazda3 but my dad wouldn't let me. So I got the Ford and tried to make it a car I could enjoy every day by throwing in the DVD system, phenoix gold speakers, rockford sub, tint... I plan on chipping it and upgrading the suspension as the car reminds me of driving my van because it's top heavy and just has so much body roll its not even funny.

I'm also no interested in taknig a $20,000 hit on the damn thing... did you know Blackbook on this thing is only $10,000 for a 2007 with 11,000km on it!?

In the end I didn't think it through and pretty much bought the worst car for me. I play music so I should have bought a hatch-back/wagon for starters... I hated the audio system so bad I spent close to $3000 changing shit out.... and the handling is so bad that I can't trust it as much as my grand-am for manouverability in an emergency situation. I also can no longer trust it for reliabilty since my last dealer checkup resulted in them not putting any oil in...and leaving the cap off....and ended up putting metal flakes in my oil pan. Dealer won't do anything until the engine actually dies.

All in all... never going to buy a Ford again, never going to buy a car within 3 hours of my old car dying again...and will only lease a new car from now on.

My next car is a Volkswagen Tiguan... thats it.
