diff oil. - Click HERE for Original Thread

Cheemoney
i checked the tech links for the rx7's and i couldn't find what type of gear/diff oil to use. right now i'm running 5w20 (previous owner put it in for winter use) but i'm wondering what the standard stuff is?

Mobius
Ummm, what? 5w20 gear oil? I think you had better check again. I believe it's 75w90 stock. Pretty generic stuff.

Cheemoney
no, 5w20 engine oil. what viscosity of oil goes in the diff?

Mobius
75w90, same as the tranny. Available at any autoparts store.

Cheemoney
cool, thanks. i probably have some at work. have you ever tried that mazda M-V atf oil in the tranny? i know we put it in there even for manual transmissions.

Mobius
Can't say that I have. I don't know anything about ATF. I use Motul 75-90 for my FD.

vpr123_west
the fsm says 80w90 for the trans and diff. if you have a lsd you should use a friction modifier. do not use m-v it will rip your diff apart its too thin only the old mx-6 and 323 take atf in the trans. rx-7's all take 5w30 engine oil due to heat requirements. Alldata and mitchell say the exact same i dont know you couldn't find it in the tech links.if you work at the dealer try the online manuals there out now

Cheemoney
dude, i so would. but webers is so outdated. sometime in 09 we're gonna pick up and move shop to a new building with computers and such. but right now, all i got to go on is the word of the journeyman and the tech that sold it to me. think the workshop manuals would have that kind of info? so 80w90 in the diff AND tranny?

vpr123_west
i had to read it a couple of times i thought was a misprint but they all say the same thing gl4/5 lube 80w90. i'm at park mazda and yes workshop manuals do, they have everything in them. the faq at the top of the forum has the link to www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory_service_manual/1986_1988/
they also have the 89-91 manual online and they're free.

Cheemoney
are your manuals all crumpled and dirty too :(

Beholder
I need to pick up some redline mt90 tomorrow, getting off work early to go to weber

Cheemoney
hahaha ask for the asian dude that drives an rx7. i'm the only one lol.

Beholder
hahaha I will

you need to edit this you wrote all rx7 need 5W30 engine oil

not true..

you already said the fsm says 80w90 oil. so i think you made a typo, or you are trying to say something else maybe consider re wording casue now it sounds like you are telling people to put 5w30 in their diff.

vpr123_west
ok
engine takes 5w30 for NA and 10w30 for turbo
diff is 80w90 for lsd and open but the lsd need sfrtion modifier
trans takes 80w90 but 75w90 will work as long as its gl5 rated

we dont have manuals older than 1999 in print, so i use the online ones
