Brake Job on 97 Avalon XLS - Click HERE for Original Thread

Sure.. It is not one of the more exciting projects I have done.

At least I have pictures. :lol:

Yes... I know of the fluid from the rack. I need a new PS rack and passenger front wheel bearing. I plan to do those both at the same time.

Tools needed

1 X Can of WD40 for rusty bolts, applying to the studs and inside the wheel lugs
1 X 17mm socket
1 X 14mm socket
1 X 1/2 socket wrench or 3/8 socket wrench,
1 X 1/2 to 3/8 adjuster if
1 X Breaker Bar (to break loose bolts)
1 X C-clamp (I have a 6 inch one)
1 X 2 feet of string or rope to hold the caliper. :D

1 X 13/16 (need to check the size again) Deep socket for the wheel lugs
1 X 1/2 extension for torquing down the wheels. The extension is nice as it keeps the wrench away from your paint. :D

1 X Torque wrench

1 X New front pads
2 X New rotors. (depending on price of new rotors, you can get the old ones machined.) If you want to save time and GIT-R-DONE then just purchase new rotors. :D

The pads are Satisfid ceramic. I picked them up from part source.

Prior to that I was running the PBR Ultra Ceramic pads. Good braking for a while, but they only lasted about 40,000 kms. Prior to that I had the original OEM pads.

The rotors were $30.00 a piece. I think they are Gren. I would need to double check that. The rotors were the original ones on the car. They lasted 241,800 kms.

The Avalon is a good car. You might need to replace the front suspension. I replaced mine with KYB FR2s at 207,000 kms. I did front and rear.

The timing belt is somewhat easy to do. You just need to watch out for the tensioner as you need to compress it with a vice.

sweet, thanks for the info.

the avalon is a wicked car. My dad's has 223xxx kms on it and it still drives like it was brand new.

Glad to see that its a fairly cheap DIY job, and that the parts are readily avaiable. Good job man! thanks again for the info!:thumbup: :beer:

Along the same lines, I need to do the wife's Neon here soon her car is pushing 7.5yrs old on oem brakes, now it's only got 76,000ish km, and she does engine brake a bit... but I need pads that won't squeel at all, low dusting, and oem or better braking ability. I had hawk pads(can't remember which model) on a diff neon, noisey as all hell, but when you needed to stop fast they worked well.. but due to noise.. the wife would kill me.

The PBR Ultra Ceramic pads I had on prior were pretty good. They had low dust. I had purchased them from Autorolla on Whyte for $50.00, but they have long since moved to Saskatachewan.

The PBR’s stopped quick and overall I was very impressed. Low noise, low dust and priced right.

The Satisfied pads I put on seem to do well. It is really hard to say. Sine I put them on, I spent most of Sunday doing yard work and hauling wood, dirt in my truck out to the farm. Today they seemed to stop well, mind you I am still breaking them in. After 300kms, I will give them the Pedal to the floor brake test. :D As for the dust, and stopping power, I have only put 20 kms on them since install.

The other pads I was considering were the Munroe ones from Canadian Tire. They were ceramic pads also. They were priced at $56.00 for the front.

The Avalon fetches a premium when it comes to replacement parts. I think that parts for other cars would be less.

The Avalon is a good daily driver.

The only issues I have are a few small electrical ones. IE) The automatic climate control illumination lights do not light up, the heated seat illumination switch does not light up. (I have removed the panels and found that there are groves worn in the back of the circuit board where bulbs connect. A little back window wire repair kit should fix that.

I need to replace the strut mounts in the rear. I had replaced the struts on all 4 corners with KYB GR-2’s. They are a decent replacement strut and helped to stabilize the vehicle a bit more.

I need to replace the PS rack ($1700.00) new from Toyota, you can get on rebuilt for $99.00 online from a shop that rebuilds them (found them on ebay.) Plus shipping of about $100.00 and a core of $75.00. Local shops here want around $340.00 plus a core of $100.00 ish.

I need to replace the passenger front wheel bearing. I have the part, cost $35.00 shipped to me. Local is about $50.00 I will do the wheel bearing and the rack at the same time.

The timing belt and front 3 spark plugs are easy to do. The back 3 are a pain, you need to get creative with a few extensions and U-Joints. Memo to self…when removing and installing the lower timing belt cover use a 3/8 socket drive, not a ½ in inch. Otherwise you may snap the bolts. :mad:

I have replaced the axles (torn CV Boots). That job requires some negotiation with the lower control arms.

The parts for the car are for the most part readily available and easy to get.

I try to post pics of projects. More for entertainment and also in the event it may help someone along the line with the same car, or engine. :D

I would, but this weekend is not good for me.

I have a wine event Fri night, Saturday I am doing more slave/yard work, followed by a BBQ, then Sunday is filled with Mothers day stuff at the in-laws. :lol:

How is the weekend after? :lol:
