350z Stoptech install - Click HERE for Original Thread

aarrgghh
Time (finally) for this years mod. Finally, as I've had this sitting all winter waiting for good weather. Big thanks to Tim for the assist. I've got the 332mm BBK up front and a stoptech slotted rotor, pads and ss braided lines in the rear.

Step one: discover you're an idiot and have somehow managed to lose the wheel lock key two weeks after using it to mount the summer rubber. I still can figure out how I managed to do this as I've had wheel locks since 1994 (previous car) :realmad: . The master set at Mills Nissan didn't have a match, although they tried for me (thanks guys). Huge thanks to the staff at the south side Tire Warehouse for pulling the locks off in record time and fitting me in on a busy day. You saved my bacon.

Step two: get back from fixing step one to your help who has been waiting and raise the car onto jack stands. We also pulled the front wheels to start on the front kit.

Here's the stock setup:

Step three: remove the stock caliper and rotor, then trim the dust shield with a dremel. Caliper bolts suck, how the f do they get them so bloody tight?

Step four: test fit the new rotor and bend the dust shield for clearance.

Step five: mount the rotor, caliper and new stainless steel lines:

We didn't shoot pictures of the back, but its a stock size setup so wasn't as time consuming as the front.

Step six: bleed the brakes, bleed the brakes, bleed the brakes, bleed the brakes, bleed the brakes. Two and 2/3 bottles of racing brake fluid later heres the end result. You can see the stock caliper in the tray under the new one.

Here's the end result

Next, I took a drive to bed the pads. Good thing Tim warned about the smoke! During the first set of stops I had so much smoke coming off the brakes it would come over the hood and then through the ducts. I love the comment in the directions 'after 8 or 9 stops you may notice a distinctive brake odor', ya, you think. You'd have to have no sense of smell as well as blind to miss it.

Unfortunately, even after all that bleeding I still had a air bubble in there somewhere. Grrrr, I only had a little of the good fluid left. Anyway, had to drive the car to work and picked up some extra fluid on the way home. Totally screwed up my driving not to mention time consuming having to pump the brakes to stop quickly. Anyway, I guessed which corner it was based on the cars slight pull under extreme braking and the fact that it didn't take as long to bleed the first rear caliper and got a neighbour to help me bleed that caliper again and got it. Used almost the last of my fluid but now its rock solid. Much, much better then stock!

Excellent upgrade.

You bled both points on the front calipers? I didn't do both on the last Stoptech install, mushy mushy feel. I blame the incomplete documentation.

Also, what pads did you get with the kit? Axxis, Hawk, PBR?

PS: I always keep the lug nut lock key in the car. Always.

Congrats,

anschutz_93
lol, I saw you getting your wheel locks removed on Saturday! Now I feel special :D

euro777
sweet write up, looks good.

Grace Too
I really, I mean really hate bleeding brakes:mad: Just goes to show though, even if you do everything by the book there is still room for error. I am happy that you got the air bubble out of it.

Cheers,

Tim (GT)

Ouch. Well, you'll probably never do THAT again!

Cool. And to think, your stock was already much better than our (Z32) stock. :holy:

Really? I thought it was pretty clear when I did mine. Shrug.

Unless he specifically asked for a substitution, he probably got the standard supplied Axxis Ultimates. Jeff?

Nice work Jeff.

Yeah, I hate bleeding brakes. The only way I have found it to work for me was using a pressure bleed system which bought. Works like a charm now.

aarrgghh
I always keep the key in the car too, always. I use it to check torque every event. I was so sure it was in the trunk that I pulled the entire trunk apart to the metal looking for it before Tim arrived.

Mike over at ztune by default replaces the axxis pads, we dissused my needs and I've got the hawk HPS pads. I may try out the HP+ pads next change, we'll see.

The instructions I had were clear on the double bleed requirements. Even specified the bleed order. Must of fixed them. The problem was one of the back stock calipers, when we bled it, it went solid quite quickly after the caliper filled, but there was still a bubble mid way up the car. Had to pump a lot to get it out of there.

That's what I chose in my kit as well. I used HPS pads for several years prior on the stock brakes as well... no complaints. I may experiment with more agressive pads in the future, but so far the HPS have been great.

The instructions that were in the last Stoptech kit ended at page 21 before the bleeding instructions. Fortunately Mahesh knew about the double-bleed screws and bleeding order.

Regards,
