DRL for evo 1 - Click HERE for Original Thread

brady
My evo just finished getting inspected and the only thing I need is daytime running lights. The quote that same shop gave me is around $100 for the kit, and then $120 an hour labour for between 2-4 hours they think it will take to install. That means i'm looking at minimum $350 and possibly as high as $600 to get them installed. I wanted to see if other people thought it sounded a bit pricey, and to see if anyone has ideas about getting it done somewhere else?

Thanks for any help

newaccorddriver
just wire up the lights so they stay on all the time when the car is on. i did it on my skyline and passed easily. the DRL modules that crappy tire sells are decent at best, and takes like 5 minutes to install, so i have no idea what the shop is doing if it takes them 2-4 hours.

Thanks for the reply. I wish I knew more about it because when the guy called he sounded pretty uncertain when I asked him why it would take so long. I am going to ask if he'll wire it like that but I doubt he's going to want to do anything cheaper than the original quote.

kouki240
Take it to Husky for the DRL's, they'll wire it for under $100. $400-$600 for a simple wiring job is a fuckin joke.

flatboy
Sounds like a good shop to stay away from.

2-4 hours to install DRLs? Uh... I don't THINK so.

Maybe if they're going to re-wire all of the lights... Naw.

Probably easy enough to do for yourself, depending on what you want to do.

Most DRLs use the high beams at reduced voltage, but this isn't necessary. Having the regular low beams on is fine. They can be rigged to come on at any time that the key is in the "run" position, and that works, so long as you don't run your battery down. :) Maybe install a hidden override "push start" switch if you're worried about it.

Find the headlight relay. It's probably not to hard to find under the hood. Determine what signal it needs, probably a ground, but not always.

Tap into the signal line. Connect a relay so that the signal line gets its ground when the accessories are on. This will have the lights on any time that you're driving, but still off when you're cranking the engine.

Cost: Relay: $3.50
Misc wire: $2.25 (spool of 18AWG)
Tap connector: $0.99 (package)
Electrical tape: $0.49 (roll)

And maybe an hour of your time, if you have a beer while you're doing this.

ORrrrr.. get some fog lights that meet the fog light specs, rig them to they are on all the time whent he car is in the run position, and if you want toss a relay on the e-brake signal wire switch thing(it's a ground so if the e-brake is on fog's go off.. Tis what Chrysler/Dodge did for a number of vehicles... like the SX 2.0.

i've done a couple hundred now and i trigger either the low beams or fog lights on with a relay that disengages once the headlight switch is turned on. works super happy terrific. i don't use the reduced voltage kits because they get extremely hot and usually end up crapping out after a couple months.

evoI
with the evos, I would not try to do it yourself. the wiring is quite complex.

I got the kit for 40$, and I think 2 hours? to install @ southside mitsubishi. it was like 330$ and I know it was in for a couple other things just cant remember.

never thought of wiring it up like that before. perhaps i should reqire them like that as it solves the problem of me leaving the headlights on accidentally from the turbo timer

Care to explain how the headlamp wiring in an Evo is any different from any other car on the road?

Like most things, it's not actually hard to install, it's just a PITA. So save yourself a few hundred bucks and just spend an evening with your car.

no fucking idea. I was talking with a guy in BC that tried installing his own DRL, and he said after 3 hours of getting no where he just took it to a shop. So since I hate doing pretty much anything electrical, I did the same thing.

midnite
most people i know install a set of fog lights that come on with the ignition. probably the easiest way.

I called up djauto here in edmonton and they quoted me $100 for DRL.

They have done numerous evo 1's before so thats why I called them up, but they are a lazy bunch haha I called to see when they could book me in for the install (they said it wouldn't take long and that no module was needed), they took my name and number and said they would call me back with a time that i could bring the evo by.... and well the lazy buggers never called me back and everytime i try to call them the main number goes to a fax machine and the cell number always goes to voicemail. :dunno:

I'm going for an OOP on friday so I'm -really- in a hurry to get DRL installed on my evo.

I've been on a mission to try and get these installed and well... I haven't been able to find a relay in the city with a 87a prong (needed for proper DRL).... I think I'm just gonna buy an inline fuse and wire these bitches up straight to the battery just for the OOP b/c I'm sick and tired of running around looking for shit

go to crappy tire and ask for an automotive relay for an aux lighting system. the ones they have on the shelf are 5 prong and have what you need.

SilverNeonRacer
Princess auto in the surplus section, they tend to have the 5pin as well... In the west side location they are in the very very last row to the back left of the store

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I hit up the west end PartSource, Called them up asking for a 4-5 prong relay with one being a 87a prong and he had no idea what I was talking about so he told me he had a bunch of different ones in stock.

So I went down to check out the relays, talked to another person working there and they showed me 1 relay and they said it was all they had.

Tonight is installing new headlights and corner lights and hopefully tomorrow I can find a relay I can use from either CrappyTire or PrincessAuto.

Paying over $100 for 50cents worth of wire, a $10 relay and a little bit of labor is a little too much for me to justify, specially when the DRL are just gonna come off anyways because I ALWAYS drive with my lights on.

Only problem is they would have to swich off when the high beams come on. just anther thing to wire in

True, but that's just a simple relay.. 5 pin would probably be easiest.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I went to CrappyTire and they only had the same relay as PartSource, so I went over to PrincessAuto and they had one with a 87a pin.

Quick wiring job and I should be ready for the OOP on friday.
