Mmm. The article says the pelican might have been going for food. But I thought birds use their talons to pull fish out of the water...

Not all birds have talons. Birds of prey have talons (Hawks, Eagles, Owls). I would assume that a pelican would have webbed feet if anything, as its generally a marine bird?
