Quick ques., hope someone out there will be able to answer this. Is it illegal to replace the factory steering wheel that has an airbag attached with it with an aftermarket steering wheel that does not have an airbag with it? I always thought that it was illegal but someone told me recently that it is NOT illegal?! Anyone out there who can shed some light onto this? Thanks

w/ airbag to no airbag, yes illegal.
w/ airbag to another wheel with airbag OR w/o factory airbag, it is okay. |

he's saying if your car HAS airbags, it is OK to replace the wheel as long as the wheel has an airbag
OR if your car never came with airbags, then you can replace the wheel with a wheel that does not have an airbag
illusionsir: from my understanding, removing the airbag is ILLEGAL no matter what. A DOT 4pt harness is NOT legal to drive on the road (it does not allow you to lean over in the event of a rollover).
Some also say that having a rollbar/cage to save your ass in a rollover event isn't a good idea either because your head is so close to the bars that you can crack your skull open on them :) |

| Thanks for clearing that up, it was late last time I posted.. Heard roll cage or bars without helmet will do more harm than good when roll over too.. |

4 or 5 point harnesses are not legal on the road
you will still get a seat belt ticket with them |

| regarding 4 or 5 point safetbelt. illegal because you can't lean over. Makes you wonder if the silly twacks legislating safety regulations ever watch car racing. I'd rather get in one of those with all their safety gear. There rules are much more stringent and just think hitting a concrete barrier at 100+mph is probably about the best test of safety equipment I can think of. The only problem I can see with it how do they know the belt is safely installed, then again it should be pretty easy to develop some testing protocol for it. |

turbomike, are you sure?
i did not know this... i would imagine that having the 5-point harness ALOT safer than having a plain lap/chest belt...
what kind of fine would you get? |

| So what if you bought a car with an aftermarket wheel?? Can you get ticketed then?? How do they know if you have changed the wheel or if it was bought like that! :dunno: |

| I think if it was bought from a dealer like that then its o.k, but if its a private sale then they have no way of knowing when it was put on and u could get a ticket. |

| They should put the stock one back on before selling, its not legal to sell a car with the SRS modified or removed as far as I know. |

4 or 5 point belts and non-reclining race seats are THE worst thing you can do for your safety in a street car. Only way to properly use 4 or 5 points is if you have the belts mounted approx. 4 inches down from the shoulders on a roll-cage bar behind the seat. Lap belts should be mounted at a 45 degree angle to the floor of the car. If you're running on the street and don't have a cage, DO NOT run harnesses. If you autox, that's ok because you really don't get going fast enough to induce a roll over, and if you do roll it isn't going to be as vicious as on a road course or off of a highway.
Also, I can't think of a single 4 or 5 point harness that is DOT approved. Everything is SFI approved for racing, but not DOT. |

| The Devil's Advocate sez: So what if you replace factory set up w/ air bag to a no air bag steering wheel like momo? Who's going to notice that and give you a ticket? You could always say you bought the car like that, if 2nd hand. |

| You are not likely to get a ticket, I never have. But it is illegal and not recommanded to do so, I want a CTR steering now, smaller wheel diameter and yet still having an airbag. |

its just another thing to add up.. Insurance comany could not pay out if you were killed in an accident because your car that was originally equiped with airbags had them disabled illegally? Same thing with modified brakes i heard..
