I'm interested in picking up a running car in order to restore it. It is currently unlicensed. Is there a temporary "In Transit" licence available to the general public? I know dealers have access to these, but can I get one as a private citizen?
How would I go about it?
How much does it cost?
What insurance is needed?
The total drive will be about 30 km, so there really is a towing option here, but I'd like to do this as cheaply as possible.
Thanks,
Ramjet

| Go to the registries office... That's their job. |

| As simple as that? Nice! |

1. You need insurance on it to get the Intransit... most good insurance companies will allow you to add it to your policy with only a bill of sale (proof of ownership)
2. Go to a registries and get the "intransit" permit it costs $25.00 is valid for (I think) 7 days... But is only good for Point A-B, no cruise nights.
3. Pick up your car, Affix the permit in the window, and ensure you have the insurance, bill of sale and all of your paperwork in order... You may get pulled over as there will be no licence plate on the vehicle..
Good luck |

or...
Just rent a car hauler from uhaul or a friend that has one. :D |

| Or... Just slap a plate on it, and drive the 30kms, hoping and praying that you don't get involved in an accident or pulled over. |

And if you do that, and get pulled over, or in a collision, I am sure Rob will dole out $2875, to cover your no insurance ticket...

I wasn't advocating the illegal activity posted above... I was just saying; It *COULD* be done...
Personally I would just tow it with a dolly rented from U-haul for $15 |

Wouldn't it cost under $50 to get it towed that far? That's probably cheaper that the in-transit permit, the phone calls with insurance and all the running around you would have to do to make it legal.
Tow truck = one call and a Visa number. |

In the (now woefully distant) past, I'd dropped in at my insurance company with a bill of sale, got the car insured (I was planning on putting it on the road right away) then slapped my old plate on the car and took it home. Generally, within a day or so, the plate that was slapped on the car was registered to the car.
That was back when I was buying cars for less than $500.
Oh, and the "failure to produce" ticket for registration I seem to recall as having been something like $20 at the time. A risk I was willing to take |

It depends on what exactly you mean by 'tow', If you mean on a tow dolly as Rob suggested you have nothing to worry about. If your thinking of towing it with a rope or chain or something similar, it is pretty high on your illegal scale. If you plan on using a tow bar, they are legal but i wouldnt reccomend them. |

at least rent a trailer with brake lights or get a proper tow. i came up pretty quick on a van being pulled by a truck with tow straps and no tail lights which was doing about 30-40 kmh on the highway the other night.
common sense people! |

A) Car dolly from U-haul works on fwd or rwd if the drive shaft is disconnected(or manual tranny in N)
B) Car dolly is $40/day + their insurance and GST, I asked for a half day rate before they wouldn't give it to me.
C) If you tell the Uhaul dealer the car being towed has no registration they wil lnot rent the dolly to you as wheels are on the ground and the dollies don't have plates so they use "yours".
D) The car hauler is the more legal way, it's like $70/day and the car is completely off the road. |

I would likely go with the tow truck option - making it someone else's problem is often worth the couple of extra bucks.
Thanks for all the advice.

| How soon you needing this done? To bad you didn't post this up before Friday, I was in Edmonton with a hauler and would have done it for fuel money. |

Just under consideration for now - putting together all of the costs to get the vehicle to where I can work on it. Towing costs (and any of the other options) look like they will add about 10% to the cost of the vehicle.
Every penny counts when your wife is watching your hobby! |

| Ahh well next time I'm in Edmonton, and if you want to go the car hauler way, I can tow it for you if you want to pay for the trailer, and maybe a $5er for fuel :P |
