Hey all
I'm new to this forum and was wondering if someone could give me a couple of idea's here or ways I can make mine better.
I have a 98 daytona (hatchback) and need to hold my sub in place somehow. Right now I'm about to screw a piece of plywood under my carpet because I have a hole where my spare tire is right now. On top of the I have my sub box which holds my 2 10" subs right now. The main problem of course so any sudden stops or starts the box moves and I don't want to damage anything or in case of a accident I don't want the thing hitting me in the back of the head.
My idea right now for keeping it in place is to take 2 u-shaped pieces of medal and bending them so they fit around the box from back to front.
At the back I will have them bolted into the plywood firm against the back on the sub running straight up the back and flat on the top about half way across the top I'm going to of set them both at angle's still flat to the top. They wont go right to the corners but half way between half and the edge. They wont be firm against the front but instead have them slop down slowly so I have a space from where they bolt into the plywood again and the
front window of my sub box.
I'm going to paint these medal bars blue to match my car but not the exact blue so I can have some contrast in color. (I have my calibrators painted this color right now).
does this sound good to anyone?
does anyone have any other was they think make work?
or any ways I can expand on my idea to make it better?
thank for your time everyone that has read this

bungie cord!
The L brackets doesnt sound like a bad idea.. should work, just make sure you use short enough screws so it doesnt poke holes to the underside of your car.. letting water in and then rust :)
Is it carpeted? what kind of carpet? Maybe a few strips of velcro would keep her in place..

i use 2 L brackets, screwed into the floor.
I also have no gas gauge cause I drilled through the wire, but my light still works so it's all good  |

I hate L-brackets....they look tacky if not covered up and you have to screw and unscrew them if you need to remove your box. (plus the screws will strip out eventually) My design lets you take out or reposition the box anywhere on the smooth base. You may have to replace the foam every year or so depending upon how many times the box taken out or repositioned.
Here is a slick way of doing it.... I've used it in my car as well as three of my customers (I use to build custom sub boxes and install systems in my spare time......I'm also an Electronics Engineering Tech.)
Go to Revy and buy yourself a 4 foot by 4 foot piece of plywood either 3/8" or 1/2" thick. (measure your spare tire cover first to ensure 48" is enough)
Drop your stock spare tire cover on the plywood, trace the outline and cut it out with a jigsaw. Round the edges with a sander and check that it fits good ( I like to router the edge so it's at a 45 degree angle)
Next go to a fabric store, find something that matches your interior (yes it feels wierd going into a fabric store but you will get over it...just make sure your friends don't see you)
I suggest taking a little piece of the interior with you to check the color against.
The material must have a smooth finish like a fake leather or rubbery material.
( I normally pick up what looks like a black leather material...black allways seems to fit in no matter what the color is )
Drop your plywood onto the back side of the material you got and trace the outline with a felt or pen. Trace another line 1" outside the outline and cut on that line.(you need extra to cover the sides of the plywood)
Buy some 3M spray glue at Revy and spray it on the plywood and on the material and make sure you get the edges of the plywood. (make sure not to get any spray glue on yourself its really sticky and hard to get off)
Lay the material down flat and very carefully place the plywood down on it ensuring that the 1" of material shows up all the way around the plywood(don't worry if its not perfect)
Kneel on the plywood and pull the material up and around the side. throw a few staples in it to keep it tacked down. You can leave it with the staples in or wait until the glue dries and remove the excess 5/8" of material with a knife.
(the harder you pull the better the fit and smoother the material will be on the sides )
So now you have a good looking smooth base for your sub box.
Go to Walmart and pick up some of that sticky foam material they put on the bottom of cupboards and stuff in RV's (go to the RV section)
It looks like a mesh and is very rubbery foam (comes in different colors)
Then you glue this to the bottom of your sub box.
I don't know what material is on the bottom of your sub box but you have to make sure that the foam bonds well or else it will tear off after a few days.
( I usually glue it to a 1/4" plywood base and screw it into the sub box bottom)
When you drop the sub box onto the smooth base you will find it almost impossible to move....the glue will rip off before the box will move.
Needless to say you could drive up a hill at a 45 degree angle and your box won't even move a millimeter.
Another bonus of the new plywood base is that you can screw amps to it on either side (I like to put them on the bottom side to keep them hidden)
Good luck....hope this helps you out |

yeah I'm not with the L brackets idea cause I don't want to screw into my box thats not good.
yeah there is carpet in the back and it's just this really thing stuff dunno what it is though.
I like the idea you gave erfinder but thats a lot of work and everything LOL and I want something a little more flashy or something.
thats why I thought like a roll cage almost for my sub would be different and original and eye catching :D
also I'm going to cover my whole hatch with plywood not just over my spare tire and going to put this foam stuff my dad got that you put under carpet so that I can't hear and vibrations from the sub :D

Something that also looks nice is that smooth fake leather with pictures, words or logos stitched into it.
There are lots of places that can stitch in a picture of your liking... One of my customers from saskatchewan got a big Phoenix gold logo stitched into the center with a couple of smaller logos on the side (think it was Alpine and Clarion). ( I think it cost him about $50 on the condition that they stitched in the company name in one corner as sponsorship )
I can't remember the shop he got to do it but there are tons of them around.
It was way cool.... the gold in the main logo really matched the black leather well.
Anyways... it sounds like a pile of work but really it would take me about 20 minutes start to finish once the materials were purchased.
The only problem with thinks like metal restraints is that you can't remove them or your box if you need the trunk for something (like say camping).
I personally pull by box out about 10 times a year for a day or two (sometimes I would remove the box to make the car faster during the day and then pop it back in at night just before I go for a cruise) |

Buy my Mazda, it has factory straps in the back that cinch down a sub box perfectly! LoL
If you can find some straps like I have in the car though, get a colour that matches your interior, mount the hardware underneath your carpet where needed and strap it down. It's simple, holds the box extremely well, yet you are able to remove it in a few seconds.

well it's over now I have put something in to keep them from moving LOL....I went driving and went past jb and talked to a guy and we decided on just using velco to keep them from moving cause he had it in his car and it was nice and clean cause of course nothing was showing or anything, It's not as flashy as I wanted to put in but it only cost me 10 bux for 5 feet of this shit and I used all of it LOL
I used it to keep my plywood down and also my rug down so I didn't have to put in any screws whch is a plus cause I was to keen on putting holes in my body cause they it could rust and shit and give me problems in the future.
But now of course I'm looking for ways to make it flashy, like extra's I could add around my sub and shit.
with the metal bars I was going to put in I was going to wing nut them so I would just have to twist a couple times and they would be off so it would have been easy but of course this way was cheaper in the end and easier LOL no bending medal or anything but not as flashy once again.
so if anyone has an good idea's of how to pimp up my sub box and hatch (ie lights logo's anything else) please post and if you have it down in your car already pleasse take a couple pictures and send them to me. Just post here and then send them to my hotmail (sword4hire39@hotmail.com) or add me to messenger or something and send them that way
hope to hear soemthing back.

Hey Ty
Your older, stronger, faster, better looking big brother says you should add another engine in the rear hatch and make the Daytona All Wheel Drive. :P
That, and it would make the car look like a Lamborghini, what with the engine in the back under glass :D

Tim you are one stupid ass mother f@cker and no I'm not going to do that dumbass
First off I would have to chop block a lot of shit and it would be hard to get it all to work and everything....not impossible but impossible with my paycheck I got right now and instead of doing that I would buy myself a nice truck first :P
so I will give you one of these :fingersx: and walk across the hallway and kick you in the teeth when I scream to tell you to read this when I press post BITCH!!!!!

i don't like L brackets either but the method above doesn't do anything for you in the event of an accident.
It holds better than velcro....I know that for a fact....been there done that a couple of times. (guess I never learned the first time)
If the velcro is attached to a "carpet" on either the sub box or floor it comes off very easy....basicly you end up with both velcro pieces attached to the box (or floor) with one side that is slightly sticky and very hairy.
If the sub was to be permanantly stationary all you have to do is remove a speaker, drill a hole through your box and plywood and drop in a bolt.
Silicon the base of the bolt and your done....5 minutes and less than a buck in parts.
Another alternate way that I have done is to make a two piece pressure fit base for the sub box.
You take a piece of wood the exact size of the base of your box ( 3/4 plywood) then you cut out the center of the wood so there is only 2" on all sides (so its a rectangular piece with a hole in the center) (thin blade jigsaw works best)
Get a roll of electrical tape and go around the outside diameter of the inside piece a few times until the inner piece fits back into the outter piece snuggly.(you can also use fabric and cover the inner base if you plan to show how the sub box can be removed)
Drill two 1/8" holes through the sides of the plywood so that it goes through both the inner and outter base pieces
You paint and then screw the outer piece onto the base of the box.
Then you take the cutout piece and screw it to your floor.
You then fit the box with the outer base onto the inner base section on the floor.
You get some long cotter pins or nails and slide them into the 1/8" holes you made so that the nail or pin goes through the outer base into the inner base.
This is a 100% solid way to mount it and you can pull the cotter pins out if you need to remove the box.
It's very simple and doesn't cost much....and its totally seemless....most people figure you bolted or screwed the box down until you show them you can pull the box out in less than 10 seconds.
Sorry for the long posts....its hard to describe the process without details. |
