Do military police have any jurisdiction off military bases, or over civilian affairs?
Situation:
I was driving NB on 127th st yesterday when two older cars (one a nicely done up hot rod, 30's ford I believe, but don't quote me, and the other a 70's muscle car with fat racing tires on the back) took off VERY spiritedly from the lights at 137th ave heading WB.
There was a military cop in the left turning lane headed EB (to turn NB) as they did this, and he didn't even blink an eye. I would have thought if he'd had any jurisdiction that he would have gone after them and wrote them up? At least followed them so that he could get in contact with EPS?
What is the deal? |

To the best of my knowledge, MP's have the authority to enforce provincial acts, and criminal code, just like members of muncipal police service... (although I may be wrong)
Eventhough he may have "witnessed" this spirted move, it is also likely that he a) didn't care, b) had other things to do...
It has been my experiance that MP's tend to keep to base and only venture off when they have too, ie/ bringing one back that had the misfortune of being arrested after a night of libations. |

That is what I thought, which confused me when he didn't appear to give two shits.
Thanks for the quick reply! |

As a law enforcement officer, they can utilize their powers outside of the base boundaries, however, unless you're a flagrant abuser, they'll likely leave you be (they may make a call and follow you until local constabulary arrive, then act as a witness). Same thing as a CP or CN railway cop...
However, don't even think of blinking wrong if you're on a base (such as driving into / out of CFB Edmonton's Steele Barracks (as in going to attend a rare autoslalom there -- I say rare, as the EPS' driver training classes have taken up 90% of the available weekend dates this year). The MPs take a dim view to speeding, even dimmer when it's a civilian doing so on their turf. Respect the environment you're in when you're there. Same thing, again, as a CP or CN railway cop... |

In Cold Lake we had MP's roaming around off base and they seemed to practice jurisdiction wherever.
I figure why not though.. they should be allowed to. Boy do they pick on kids though  |

I seem to remember one who liked to "utilize his powers" all over this board! |
