How do I protect myself from buying stolen property? - Click HERE for Original Thread

XtraX
Say I wanted to buy a TV off a forum member, Facebook or the bargain finder. Is there any surefire way to protect myself from buying something that is stolen? What steps can I take before a purchase find out if a piece is definitely stolen or not? What do I do if I find something that is stolen, or that I suspect is stolen?

to protect yourself, pay cash and use a fake name. :dunno:

you can write down the serial numbers, if there are any, and check with EPS or the manufacturer (who usually have records for warranty purposes.) i wouldn't expect to get far with either though..

if you suspect something is stolen, you report it to the police. i believe you can even do it on their website.

Pretty much if the guy seems sketchy or the deal is too good to be true, just walk away...

BLOCKER
If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Ask for the original receipt.

ehos
Buy it from his house. Get license to match his address. Get bill of sale with Lic # and address.

Get a witness. Get a reciept. Get a notary to notarize the receipt with the witness/seller etc etc.

have blocker give you a ride there in his police car. if it's no longer for sale, then it's probably stolen.

.... so I was at princess auto a week ago.

A guy approaches with the 'Hey you have a big truck, you want to buy a big tv'

Anyways the usual scam, but I had enough time to take this yahoos license plate. Oddly enough it had one of those plates with the black registration sticker.

Anyways........ I was contemplating calling it in... These guys are always around princess auto and a few other places.

What if anything could be done???? :dunno:

not much . call it in.
