Black rims/ Polished lip - Click HERE for Original Thread

STiPWR
Does it seem like that Black/Polished lip is the new Gunmetal fad?

Sorta pissing me off.......I know obviously I'm not the first to get that combo, but it seems like every 2nd fucking modified car out there now has them.

Possibly because cheap rim manufacturers are producing them?

Is this the new fad?

Or is it just me?

Blackout-spec
ive had my gunmetal rims with a polished lip for a long time...

Soulfly
It's been the 'Cool thing to do' for a little while now...

It's just that, Ricers finally have the money to buy them. :p

Sell me your rims for cheap.

JoshP2002
I have them, and Im newer to the crowd.. but my reason for getting them is I wanted a blacked out car - but my window trim is chrome, so I thought it went well together. Plus Ive never been a huge fan of chrome, especially on a black car.
And the reason they arent crazy expensive is because I dont race with them - the additional weight between them and higher brand wheels just wasnt worth the extra money for me - at least not yet, it could be in the future.
I havent seen too many cars around with black wheels/chrome lip though aside from your own, mine, and a few others.

Edit; And the majority of the cars I do see with them on, it just doesnt work.. not every car can pull it off.

Graphicdude
I think you notice it more because you are looking for it :D And ya as Josh said there are tons of people trying to sport the black with polished lip on vehicles that just don't look good with them on. It probably is a fad right now.

Although, I think people are scared of the Chrome rims now because they don't want to be considered a Baller or Ricer :dunno: I have always looked at rim selection like buying a pair of shoes. They have to work with the outfit. If they don't you look like a fag. But many people don't look at it that way. They figure since everybody is rockin black with polished lip, then they have to get them as well.

But don't worry Aaron, just because some loser in an Ugly Lancer is sporting the same color combo rims as you, doesn't mean their car is instantly killer like yours :D

GOT SE-R
I have noticed many many cars and trucks with this combo. I personally dont care for colored rims (black, red, yellow, blue) at all. And yes some cars do look good with them (but I still dont like it).

dc2696
I agree STiPWR, they are everywhere!

I have that combo but I dont think I buy anything for my car to improve how it looks, my rims are that color by coincidence only, I bought them because they weigh 9lbs.

STiPWR
I think its probably a combination of both,

Me looking for them because I have them on my car,

Its the new fad.:(

Yeah, the gunmetal rim fad was like 2002-2005. Now you barely see any around at all.

JustinL
I had black/polished on my track wheels. They were in rough shape and now I've blasted all the black paint off and I think they look way better in the natural aluminum color.

STiPWR
I agree, although the pic of the black ones was filthy, and the new ones clean.. haha..

I see you like bringing your greasy car parts into the house aswell! My wife is always screaming at me.

AudiInProgress
I <3 chrome.

RangerMan
its been a combo for a LONG time

looks good on your car though

i was gonna go for that look, but opted all chrome

40 year old .... New fad........ hehehehe....

The earliest model to make this look popular was the 69' 911. As I recall?????

It has been used numerous times in various 911 variants and 944's.

Not a new fad but rather an old fad with a new flavour.

Flip
I'm glad people are going back to black/polished, thought for a while bronze was going to take off and I'd have to change. It's not that big of a deal, I still know there's a difference between $600 per, and $150 per wheels.

The Stig
My first purchased set were "polished" with black pockets.

kornsined
Yeah I've had mine for a month. I do see it more often. I think I'd like either all black or gold. Maybe even white.

Prudz_lude
I hope tons of people keep buying black with polish lip rims. It means that i will be one of the few with Opal rims hehehe

Yes I'm not saying it just came out. Just that its become super popular in last couple years.

Great job arguing a point that I didnt even mention.

Fail.

Yeah Phil, but unfortunately there are very few who can tell the difference.

those people dont' really matter. those are the people that hear words like GT2860RS, LSD, release fork etc. and just smile and nod their heads. I don't care what those people think about my car. More importantly, i build my car for how I like it and how I think it looks good, not what anyone else thinks. If someone thinks that a beat up GTS on with Core racing rims and ractive exaust is a better car then my GTR, so be it. Let them wallow in their own ignorance.

You are correct it is just you.

:D

I figured I would answer your original question since I missed it in my first futile attempt.

SpeedwayRacing
Its a good look, something that I did 5 years ago or so back when I was still using my civic as my DD.

I think the car looked hot back in the day, and I still love the look on a lot of cars today. Just because other people are doing it shouldn't detract from the way your car looks IMO. There are a lot of STIs around with polished / black wheels but I personally still think Arron's car is likely the hottest local example I have seen.

I am a lot less baller now with my slipstreams. The 17s I had before were actually not that heavy at only 17 pounds. But the slips are around 10 pounds.. since the car is track only now looks had to take a back seat.

Maybe you just have to look for a way to stand out again. As far as I know me and Joel are the only ones around running black slips with a red lip.

4thGenLude
cant wait to get my black/polished combo :)
jk
in all honesty though ive never thought to myself "wow they're everywhere" so no worries. And as previously mentioned, you'll notice it a lot more when it's on your car too.

iLLlegal
I honestly like how they look on black cars. im still debating if I want to go that way with the Z. but for some reason I HATE CHROME!!!! it looks way to flashy for me, and there have been few times that I like it. If I had the cash I would have some nice bronze works right now but I dont  or even gunmetal. I was also considering gold too. I like seeing the black wheels around because I like how they look and when they are done with the right car they look awesome.

as stated before it really depends what colour of car you have and matching it up nice with that.

SpeedwayRacing
Why do they have to be Work wheels.. I am sure you could pick up a set of knock off wheels for a fraction of the price in a bronze color. Then you could spend the left over money on whatever, intercooler/s, turbo stuff.. stereo...booze and whores. The options are limitless.

Psi
I just bought some black/chrome wheels for my car. I really don't care if someone thinks its a fad, and they can kiss my if they don't like it.
What I do know is that I didnt buy some knock off special, ive got the real thing and I love them.

More baller status FTW.

I personally love this look better. Those rims and tires kick ass.

SpeedwayRacing
its more of a hardcore look thats for sure.

I will continue to buy knock off parts and follow DIYs and my car will cost less and be faster then most of my competition. In most cases money spent doesn't = performance gained. Most high end parts are actually just a waste of money.

I just think it depends on the car. I do see this combo everywhere, but only certain cars can pull it off.

I find that a bit of a generalization. So you're saying Volks are as good as Rota's? or XSpower turbo's are as good as Garret?

zhao
high end parts are good because the companies put money into R&D. maybe there is a really good knock off copy of it for cheaper, maybe there isn't, but its not ractive or apc thats coming out with ground breaking performance parts. its companies that charge more because they have to because they actually try to make better and better products.

cheap stuff has no R&D, its a copy of something else built to specs of something else, at best.

look at ractive and apc stuff, in a lot of cases it gives u negative performance gains over stock.

its kind of like saying, a tire is a tire because its made of rubber, so just buy the cheapest tires possible in that category and they will perform just as well. i generally believe you get what you pay for, but use ur head as not all expensive parts are worth what they cost.

also, when the vehicle you are modding is new and hasn't been around for 10 years, you kinda don't have a lot of options or a ton of support with experience from other people on that car.

crzyone
I've had them on my fiero for about 2 years now. Back when I bought them I didn't car that the 18x8s on the back weigh 24# each, but I doubt I would buy them again. Falken Torque 5s. They look good, but are heavy. Now that I have over $20k into my fiero it might be time for an upgrade.

SpeedwayRacing
I am not saying that knock of parts are "AS GOOD" as the original. A lot of the time the real difference is in the details. I guess more what I am talking about is value for your dollar. My Track car has some pretty cheap knock off parts in it. Actually aside from the suspension and seat for the most part I can say the car is built from high value parts that are knock offs.

It currently has Rota Slipstreams, a Ractive 4-1 Header and a Racer Designs Short ram intake.

Now the slipstreams that are on the car I bought used with a set of azenis that I burned off and then replaced with azenis 615s. I paid $400 for the rims with a set of tires that were still good for a full season of autocross and track days. I could have gone out and spent a small fortune on actual Spoon Sw88s Or Regamasters. But why, Instead I spent $100 for a wheel that is only 1 pound heavier and has no structural issues to worry about. Espeically on a car that is under 2000 lbs. What are a set of regamasters worth.. Around $1500 just for the rims.. I saved my self $900. I could buy a whole second set of rotas for that price.

The Ractive header that I have is a knock off of the APEXi 4-1 Header that they make/made for the GSR integras. The only real differance between the two parts is in the welding at the flanges. I spent a couple hours with a die grinder smoothing the flange to pipe transission out and I would bet you the two parts now have identical performance. Mine actually might be better but there is no way I am going to put out over a grand just to see. The pipe is the same size, both are mandrel bends and the collector is in exactly the same spot. Again This time I saved my self around $700-1200 depending on where you would have got the APEXi one from.

The Racer designs intake is a ultra cheap brand that I actually got from autotoys for my d16z6 back in the day. it works just fine with a k&N filter added to the end of it. Why spend hundreds more for a ARC airbox or a Password JDM whale penis.

I guess what I am saying is that I am all about value and I do understand that the big high end companies spend a lot of time and money on R&D. Thats great but in the end if you can get a knock off for less then half the price why wouldn't you if the performance is nearly identical.

gab
i am guilty of the black wheel chrome lip look. i couldn't help myself. i tried to find something else, i really did. but it's a black mini with chrome accents, and i wanted a wheel that suits it. so i went black and chrome. it's a great look, i am glad it is widely accepted now. because if it wasn't............ i would have done it anyway!
